LAKE CHARLES, La. ( September 6, 2007 ) – The Norfolk Convention and Visitors Bureau was awarded today with the Southeast Tourism Society’s “2007 Shining Example Award” in the category of Tourism Awareness, officials announced.
NCVB President Tony DiFilippo accepted the honor on the organization’s behalf during an award ceremony at L’Auberge du Lac Hotel and Casino, Lake Charles, Louisiana.
The Bureau was honored for its promotional efforts during May`s National Tourism Week, including a rally to celebrate exceptional Norfolk hospitality providers and a unique promotional giveaway at Norfolk International Airport.
“The award is a testament to our continued hard work and creative approach toward getting Norfolk on the map as an attractive destination for business and leisure travelers,” DiFilippo said. “National Tourism Week was an excellent opportunity for all of the Southside convention and visitors bureaus to partner and promote our region, and it paid off in a big way.”
During National Tourism Week the Bureau hosted the 6th Annual “Champions of Hospitality” rally to celebrate the city hospitality businesses and providers. Over 700 people attended – more than quadrupling the previous year’s attendance.
Meanwhile, more than 5,000 travel pillows were handed out passengers on select Southwest Airlines flights during a regional “Thank The Visitor Day” promotion on May 18. The pillows contained the logos of every Southside Hampton Roads city.
The NCVB realized more than 600,000 media impressions for their National Tourism Week efforts, including a syndicated Associate Press article.
