The City of Norfolk is a buzz about the opening of the tale of Captain Phillips. It wasn’t so long ago that Tom Hanks was seen wandering around town at local restaurants and theaters during the filming of the Hollywood blockbuster.
The movie is centered around the true-life story of Richard Phillips, captain of the cargo freighter Maersk Alabama, seized by Somali pirates in 2009. It was the first time an American cargo ship had been hijacked in 200 years.
Hanks spent time in and around Norfolk and Virginia Beach last Summer while filming the movie. The Virginian-Pilot even followed Hanks sightings and his Twitter feed during his stay in the region (http://hamptonroads.com/Hanks).
