NORFOLK, Va. – (Sept. 2, 2009) – Norfolk, Virginia recently received its certification as a Virginia Green Destination.  This official designation qualifies Norfolk to fully participate as a partner in the Commonwealth of Virginia’s campaign to promote environmentally friendly practices within Virginia’s tourism industry.

“We’re extremely proud to receive the Virginia Green Destination certification.  It validates our efforts to create a healthier city as well as promoting ‘green’ alternatives to the visitors of Norfolk,” said Anthony J. DiFilippo, president & CEO of Norfolk CVB.

Currently, Norfolk certified Green businesses include Norfolk International Airport, the Commonwealth’s first Virginia Green airport, 12 hotels, 10 restaurants, five major attractions and eight travel & partner organizations.  This year several Green events took place in Norfolk including Clean the Bay Day and Chow! Hampton Roads.

Certified hotels now offer optional linen service, recycling and facilities to accommodate groups who want “green” events.  Restaurants minimize the use of disposable food service products, recycle waste, conserve energy and use water efficiently.

The City of Norfolk recently hired a manager of environmental protection programs to lead efforts to incorporate sustainability into municipal operations.  The City is recycling in all city-owned buildings and is currently operating a cigarette litter prevention program.  Town Point Park, which re-opened July 3, boasts an eco-friendly plant palate, lighting fixtures that minimize energy, furnishings manufactured from recycled material and trash recycling during all events.

The Norfolk Convention & Visitors Bureau and Norfolk Tourism Research Foundation will celebrate this honor during the Annual Luncheon which takes place on Thursday, September 24 at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel.
