2009 Season to Debut New Signature Events and Newly-Renovated Town Point Park
Norfolk, VA (January 7, 2009) - Beginning in April 2009, Norfolk, Virginia’s festival season – an annual showcase of the region’s music, culture, history and food through more than 100 public events – will be in full swing. Already in its 27th year, the 2009 festival season will usher in new signature events and a newly enhanced Town Point Park, which has served as the picturesque backdrop to many of the festival’s events in previous years. New festival arrivals this year include an Antique Car and Boat Show in September, expected to draw thousands of enthusiasts from all along the East Coast.
During the July 4 weekend, festivalgoers can help celebrate the unveiling of downtown’s new and improved urban oasis, Town Point Park. Set to debut during Town Point Park’s Grand Opening Weekend July 3 – 5, 2009, guests will be the first to enjoy the park’s new pathway system, offering greater access to Norfolk’s beautiful waterfront; new stage locations; enhanced lighting and sound equipment; interactive water fountains; and lush landscape.
Festival favorites, including The Virginia Arts Festival (April – May), Town Point Park Wine Festival (April and October) and Harborfest® (July) return again this year, offering residents and visitors alike with seven months worth of maritime events, concerts, family festivals and city celebrations – the majority of which are free and open to the public.

International Azalea Festival: A Salute to NATO

The Norfolk International Azalea Festival, which originated in 1953, serves to honor and celebrate the Norfolk-based North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), by selecting one nation each year to honor exclusively through the festival’s themed activities. This year, the Azalea Festival will present a weeklong tribute to the Czech Republic. Events include The Parade of Nations, the Queen’s Fashion Show, The Coronation of Queen Azalea, International Azalea Festival Golf Classic and NATOfest, a full-day event complete with food, culture and entertainment from the 26 member NATO nations. Virginia Arts Festival

The Virginia Arts Festival is one of the premier cultural events in the mid-Atlantic. The Festival features prestigious artists from around the world in classical music, ballet, modern dance, world music, chamber music, theater and family entertainment. Virginia International Tattoo

The Virginia International Tattoo is an exhibition of marching bands, massed pipes and drum teams, gymnasts, Scottish dancers, choirs, and more, and is the largest tattoo in the United States. Dating back to 17th century Europe, a Tattoo is a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands. This year, the Tattoo will count on the participation of more than 850 performers from several countries, including: the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, the Czech Republic and Germany. Mark Morris Dance Group: Romeo & Juliet, On Motifs of Shakespeare

The ballet of Romeo & Juliet, as imagined by its composer Sergey Prokofiev, was to end happily, with the star-crossed lovers reuniting in the final scene. The repressive Soviet regime of the 1900’s forced Prokofiev to alter his vision, keeping true to the fated outcome. After many years, the original score has been uncovered, commissioned by the Virginia Arts Festival and brought to life by the Mark Morris Dance Group and Virginia Symphony. Audience members will

Spring Town Point Virginia Wine Festival
