Sarah Choo Jing’s Art of the Rehearsal (2017) is a film that explores the diverse ethnic communities of Singapore through various forms of dance. The three-channel video situates viewers on a narrow back street in the city-state with a row of low-lying homes and shops. Residents pose at the ground level and on rooftops until drum sounds emerge. As the music plays, dancers in costume perform traditional choreography. Slightly hidden behind curtains and screens, the dancers begin and end at different intervals. Through film, Jing presents how several different communities are a part of such a small place, each one contributing to Singapore’s cultural mixture.
