This national treasure celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2019 — an occasion as much to be observed for its artistic achievements as its cultural significance. Founded by groundbreaking dancer Arthur Mitchell in 1969 after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Dance Theatre of Harlem is a ballet company of international acclaim, a leader in arts education, and a testament to the triumph of the human spirit.
This return Virginia Arts Festival engagement offers additional cause for celebration, as the Festival and the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution™ have commissioned a new work which will have its world premiere performances here. The new work, including original music commissioned for the ballet, is being created by a female creative team — choreographer Claudia
Schreier, acclaimed for her works that blend “ballet’s traditional etherealism…[with] a more modern earthiness,” (Columbia Daily Spectator) and composer Jessie Montgomery, whose music has been hailed as “wildly colorful and exploding with life” (The Washington Post).
The new work will be part of a mixed repertory program that includes one of the most spectacular works in the Dance Theatre of Harlem repertoire, Dougla. See this legendary company in a triumphant engagement that showcases its many gifts.
