New! Hands-on Garden Workshops at the Hermitage

Introducing a new series of hands-on garden workshops with Curator Philip Riske. Each workshop will last approximately 3-4 hours outdoors and indoors with a maximum of 10 students.
1. Winter Plant Identification for Hampton Roads
Wednesday, January 20, 9am
With a focus on native woody plants found on the grounds of the Hermitage Museum, we will provide handy tips for knowing what plant you’re looking at based on bark, buds and remnant fruiting structures. Exotic invasive plants will be covered from time to time as well as benign non-native species. When possible, perennial flowering plants with identifiable parts still standing will not be overlooked. Included will be history, lore and the wildlife benefits of many of our native flora. 1 hour inside, 3 hours outside
Members: $12 per workshop
Non-Members: $15 per workshop

2. Pruning Shrubs and
Small or Young Trees
Wednesday, February 10, 9am
With proper pruning, trees live longer, shrubs are lush, not leggy and flowering plants bloom more reliably. Arm yourself with sound pruning principles and liberate your landscape from the hedge-trimmer. In this course, you will receive hands on experience from pruning experts. Our instructor(s) have over fifteen years of practice in and teaching the craft of pruning. 1 hour inside, 2 hours outside
Members: $12 per workshop
Non-Members: $15 per workshop

3. Planting Small Trees, Shrubs, and Perennials in the Hampton Roads Area
Wednesday, November 3, 9am
What are the best practices for planting in our area? What time of year? Deep or shallow planting? To mulch or not to mulch? What kind of follow up care is necessary? This hands-on class will incorporate best practices into a hands-on planting class. Learn from the experts while putting your own stamp on the Hermitage grounds. 1 hour inside, 2 hours inside
Registration link for workshop #3 will be updated during the fall season.
