Norfolk's Handsome Biscuit competes for bragging rights in online bracket challenge: Best biscuit in the South

The regions in the March Madness-style bracket are divided between national, regional, and local restaurants. Norfolk's Handsome Biscuit is in the Final Four!

NORFOLK, Va. — Can the Mermaid City take home bragging rights for a southern food staple?

Right now, Norfolk's Handsome Biscuit restaurant is vying for the top spot in a Garden and Gun challenge to name "The South's Best Biscuit", having made it into the Final Four!

“I do know she’s a star and deserves to be in the spotlight," co-owner John Porter said.

The "Hella Fitzgerald" — a fried chicken biscuit topped with gravy, cheddar cheese and bacon — has already won its first two bracket challenges.

It first defeated "The Glori-fried" from the Atlanta-based "Bomb Biscuit Company". Then in the second round, Handsome Biscuit is now taking on Biscuit Head's generically named "egg and cheese biscuit." Biscuit Head hails from Asheville, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina.

In the third round, the Hella Fitzgerald knocked out The Loveless Cafe's Buttermilk biscuit out of Nashville, becoming the winner of the "Local Favorites" division.

Now it's taking on the "Regional Chains" winner, the Mountaineer from Tudor's Biscuit World.

Voting for the Final Four round ends Friday, April 51, at 11:59 p.m.
