“Black is beautiful,” is a phrase that was popularized in the 1970s to promote pride within the African American community. It was coined by artist Kwame Brathwaite who expressed this sentiment by photographing models wearing natural hairstyles and traditional clothing. He would eventually form his own modeling agency known as AJASSA.
