NFK Day

July 23 2022

Noon–10 p.m.
Smartmouth Brewing Co. 1309 Raleigh Ave., Norfolk, VA 23507 Price: Free

This free, all-day street party will go from noon–10 p.m. and celebrates local beer, music, food, vendors, and more!

Norfolk Day is celebrated on July 27 each year in the United Kingdom. Four years ago, Smartmouth decided to commandeer the holiday to celebrate our own Norfolk culture across the pond! NFK Currents is excited to officially partner with Smartmouth for the fourth year of this event.

Tastes of the Tidewater region will be present with food vendors from around Hampton Roads. Bussdown Boils will be bringing flavorful seafood that represents our surrounding waterways, SmokeNGrease will bring their down-south BBQ along with cookout-staple sides, and acclaimed Norfolk restaurant My Mama’s Kitchen will be slingin’ their signature wings + more. Joysicles will be a part of the party as well to cool you down with delicious organic popsicles.

Smartmouth’s resident food truck Ghost Kitchen will feature a hot dog special made with a Norfolk dog. What is a Norfolk dog, you ask? It’s a region-specific type of natural skin hot dog that was developed by restaurateur George Bacalis in the 1930s, gaining traction at local restaurants and leading to tons of secret recipes. Chef Blake Sehestedt will have the OG Norfolk dog from Southern Packaging and will be keeping his version classic with chili and mustard.

A vendor market from noon–6 p.m. will feature an array of art and goods from local makers and merchants from across Hampton Roads. Come shop from an array of businesses such as vintage clothing, handmade jewelry, home decor, original artwork, house plants, baked goods, candles, and more. Bring the kids out to enjoy a hands-on Tidewater Wooden Boat Workshop and get in touch with how our forefathers and native Virginians traveled around the original Hampton Roads waterways.

Music will start at 6 p.m. and includes a diverse lineup of funk, soul, ambient and indie rock. Gabe Niles aka DJ Sup Ladies will be getting the day warmed up until 5 p.m. with a mix of upbeat hits and house music. Billy Mercury and the Groovemnt will get things started with their blend of hip-hop, soul and funk. Norfolk music scenes staples for over a decade, You’re Jovian and Long Division, will follow with shoegaze and ambient music sure to make you sway. Last but certainly not least is the punchy surf-inspired rock of Community Witch, sure to finish the night off strong.

Come out to support local music, art, and food and celebrate all things that make Norfolk great!
