Born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, into a musically inclined family. From the tender age of four, he was immersed in the world of music, playing the piano and organ in his local church. This early exposure to music greatly shaped his artistic journey, instilling in him a love for melody and rhythm. Growing up, Nicholas studied privately with the esteemed pianist Jimmy Aycock from the Goldsboro area, who further fueled his passion and honed his skills. The rich tapestry of gospel music he experienced during his childhood would later permeate through his compositions and performances, creating a seamless connection to the vibrant world of vinyl records that celebrate these musical traditions.

Nicholas Cole drew inspiration from a wide array of influences. Artists like Kirk Whalum, Brian Culbertson, and Jonathan Butler played pivotal roles in shaping his distinctive sound. Their mastery of jazz and ability to fuse genres inspired Cole to explore deep harmonic structures while maintaining an emotive vocal quality.

Lindsey Webster at Attucks Theatre

June 13 2026

8:00 p.m.
Attucks Theatre 1010 Church St, Norfolk, VA 23510

Singer and songwriter Lindsey Webster straddles the world of jazz, R&B, and pop, all delivered with a voice that combines beauty of tone with an impressive range. In just a few years in the onset of her career, she has achieved a remarkable track record: two #1’s and seven Top 10’s on the Billboard contemporary jazz chart—the first vocalist to garner a #1 on that chart since Sade.

If Sade were to take over Mariah Carey’s body and sing to tracks written by Steely Dan, the combination might hit somewhere close to Lindsey Webster’s sound. Until that happens, though, there will just be Lindsey. Woodstock, NY, Lindsey’s native town, might also have had something to do with her powerhouse’s lyrics, style, and down-to-earth attitude.

From the first note, Lindsey Webster captivates listeners. Her rich, soulful voice enchants a dedicated following who connect with the raw emotion she shares with them. As a soul R&B artist, she combines an admirable natural talent with a genuine, accessible stage presence.

In 2009, Lindsey met her partner, Keith Slattery, and started performing professionally. Together, with a band of world-class musicians, they’ve performed over 600 shows in venues including Bearsville Theater, Levon Helm Studios, Helsinki Hudson, Daryl’s House, The Falcon, The Lambs Club, Rockwood Music Hall, and the Red Lion.

Recording mostly original songs written by her and her collaborator pianist/bandleader Keith Slattery, Lindsey’s music conveys a smooth sultriness underpinned by genuine passion. Audiences at her concert dates nationally and internationally are wowed by her ability to put across a song without excessive showbiz gimmicks, but at key moments open up and soar to thrilling heights with a seemingly effortless ability to hit high notes. As such, she occupies a special artistic lane occupied by a relatively small handful of iconic performers such as Angela Bofill, Anita Baker, Will Downing, Sade, and Maysa. Lindsey brings her distinct Smooth Jazz Style infused with Soul R&B, continuing to make music that resonates with her fans.

On Point!: A National Exhibit Featuring Contemporary Embroidery

April 25 - May 30 2026

8:00 p.m.
d'Art Center 740 Boush St, Norfolk, VA 23510

Saturday, April 25th – Saturday, May 30th, 2026

On Point! is an exhibition of artworks that showcase contemporary embroidery from across the country. Today’s embroidery artists are pushing the boundaries of traditional needlework techniques by combining them with new and creative methods proving that embroidery should no longer be considered a purely functional and decorative craft. Works in this exhibit may utilize other materials in the work, but the clear focal point and star of the work should be the embroidery component(s).

This exhibition will take place in our smaller exhibition space, The Vault, to create a more intimate and close up experience for our patrons. The Vault is a historical bank vault within The Center, and gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a unique space in the heart of Norfolk’s Arts District (The NEON District). This will be a competitive call as this intimate space will only be able to accommodate about 25 works.

Call for artists open through March 8th. Submit here.

Wilderness Photography Foundation’s Traveling Exhibit, Nature’s Generosity

June 6 - July 11 2026

8:00 p.m.
d'Art Center 740 Boush St, Norfolk, VA 23510

Saturday, June 6th – Saturday, July 11th, 2026

Photography allows us to capture and reflect on the remarkable landscapes and diverse ecosystems that surround us, fostering a deeper appreciation for our environment. The Wilderness Photography Foundation’s mission is to use the visual power of photography to increase awareness of the beauty and value of wilderness and wildlife to encourage action to protect and preserve wild space.

The health of public lands, wildlife, predators, pollinators, and entire ecosystems is not just an environmental issue, it is a foundation for the stability and survival of life on Earth as we know it. Every species plays a role in maintaining balance. Predators regulate populations, pollinators sustain the food supply, forests and wetlands filter water and stabilize climate, and biodiversity as a whole build’s resilience. When short-term profit leads to long-term destruction, the cost isn’t just paid by nature, it is paid by future generations, by global stability, by food systems, and by the 99% of life that never had a say in the decision. Preservation isn’t a luxury. It is an investment in planetary health, economic sustainability, and the wellbeing of all living things.

Art, through creative expression, can inspire wonder, promote conversation, challenge assumptions, connect diverse thinking, help imagine new solutions, and motivate action for positive change. Join us in preserving the beauty of the wilderness through the art of photography.
