The Virginia Stage Company presents Malcolm X & Redd Foxx Washing Dishes at Jimmy’s Chicken Shack in Harlem by Jonathan Norton. 1943. Two young Harlemites form a friendship over leftover fried chicken and dirty dishwater. But a long, hot summer of heartbreak, betrayal, and racial uprisings moves them closer to the men they will become and farther from each other. This electrifying world premiere blends sharp humor with raw humanity, revealing the laughter, struggle, and brotherhood that shaped two legends. Directed by Dexter J. Singleton

Co-presented with Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Virginia Arts Festival. Happy Birthday, Hailstork! And welcome back, JoAnn Falletta! Virginia Arts Festival and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will celebrate the music of one of Hampton Roads’ finest artists, composer Adolphus Hailstork, in an 85th birthday celebration featuring works including An American Port of Call, First Piano Concerto, and Done Made My Vow. To make this special evening even more spectacular, the Orchestra’s Connie and Marc Jacobson Music Director Laureate and Grammy Award winner JoAnn Falletta returns for one night only to conduct a performance that includes pianist Stewart Goodyear and the acclaimed Norfolk State University Chorus.

Tennis legend John McEnroe embodies the American spirit. On and off the court, McEnroe has proven himself to be one of the most intriguing and controversial public figures of his time. Throughout his playing years, his bold and irreverent style made him, for many, a symbol for a generation of “rock n’ roll” athletes. Since leaving the court, his unique commentary and style in the broadcast booth have garnered him national Sports Emmy nominations.
