A Little Magic on Boissevain Ave: The Velvet Witch

What was once a life-size dollhouse in the early 1900s now holds a community rooted in spiritual healing, a full apothecary and positive intentions.

Owner and head witch Ashley Branton started The Velvet Witch in 2017 at Selden Market. The original sign still hangs proudly at 509 Boissevain Ave. in the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk, where the business now thrives.

The exterior draws you in with its charm and color, and according to Ashley, you are always drawn to something for a reason. Inside, The Velvet Witch offers more than just a glimpse into a spiritual haven. From tarot readings and crystal healings to shadow work sessions, each service is designed to help guests connect with spirit and find balance within themselves.

The Velvet Witch also offers spiritual baths, remedy rituals and a safe space tailored to each person’s needs. Appointments are available both in person and virtually. The shop is open to the public to explore and shop on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and offers walk-in tarot readings on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Along with her spiritual services, Ashley now offers fairy hair tinsel, a fun and magical addition that’s especially popular with kids.

Inside, you can find a collection of tarot cards, crystals and artwork tailored to the seasons and moon phases, creating a curated and ever-changing shopping experience. Looking to curate your own teas or herbal remedies? An herb garden lines the side of the house allowing for a fully stocked apothecary of over 50 food and organic-grade herbs. Pick out what you need or get help tailoring a mix specific to you.

Positivity radiates from the small house on Boissevain Ave., and it’s easy to see why Ashley’s customers feel such a strong connection. A couple working on the Carnival Sunshine wandered into The Velvet Witch, instantly bonded with Ashley and later invited her to officiate their wedding. The small Victorian will even serve as the backdrop for a Halloween wedding this week, filling the space with even more love and magic.

Even for those who may feel a little apprehensive about stepping into a space like The Velvet Witch, Ashley’s warmth and genuine energy quickly put visitors at ease. She welcomes everyone with an open heart, encouraging curiosity and conversation rather than expectation.

Whether you’re simply browsing the apothecary shelves or seeking guidance through a reading, the experience is all about finding what resonates with you. Keep an eye out for The Velvet Witch at local markets and her community sound baths, where Ashley continues to share her light and connection with others throughout Norfolk.
