Over Labor Day weekend 2026, Norfolk is home to several can’t-miss sporting events as the Triple-A Norfolk Tides take on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp for a six-game homestand and the Old Dominion Monarchs host cross-town rivals the Norfolk State Spartans. The Games
Friday Night Baseball: Norfolk Tides
Kick off the weekend on Friday, Sept. 4 at Harbor Park for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch as the Tides take the field against the Jumbo Shrimp. Grab a local craft pint or oversized domestic lager on the concourse, sample local barbecue and watch giant tugboats glide along the Elizabeth River right behind the outfield wall. As the sun sets, you’ll be thanking yourself for springing for tickets.
Saturday Night Football: ODU Monarchs vs. NSU Spartans
Saturday afternoon is for pigskin. Head north to Old Dominion University’s campus where tailgate lots around Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium open early. At 6 p.m., Norfolk’s biggest college sports event of the year kicks off as the Division I crosstown rival ODU Monarchs host the Norfolk State Spartans in a high-octane 2026 season opener.
If you want to pack even more star-powered entertainment into your Saturday, make time to drop by the Cousinz Festival at the Norfolk Scope Arena. Created by Norfolk’s own Pusha T and his team, this massive one-day celebration of urban music, food, and community culture kicks off at 1 p.m. right in the heart of downtown. It’s an easy stop along The Tide light rail before heading up to campus for kickoff, offering the ultimate double-header of big-stage music and high-stakes college football all in the same afternoon.

If you aren’t ready to call it a weekend just yet, head back to Harbor Park on Sunday, September 6th for a 1:05 PM afternoon matinee before taking off.

Getting to Norfolk
Whether you’re driving or taking the train, reaching the heart of the city is pretty easy.
- From Richmond & Points North: Take I-64 East through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, exiting onto I-264 West toward Downtown Norfolk. In under two hours, you’ll drop right onto Waterside Drive.
- From Points South (NC/SC): Follow I-95 North to US-17 North or connect through I-64 West, taking the easy ramps straight into the downtown core.
- By Train: Skip holiday highway traffic altogether. Amtrak’s Northeast Regional drops you off directly at Norfolk Amtrak Station (NFK), located right next to Harbor Park.
Getting Around: The Tide Light Rail
Leave the car parked at your hotel. Norfolk’s 7.4-mile light rail system, The Tide, serves as your personal game-day shuttle:
- To Harbor Park (Tides Baseball): Hop on at Downtown Plaza or MacArthur Square and take it directly to the Harbor Park Station.
- To S.B. Ballard Stadium (ODU Football): Ride the line west to the EVMC/Fort Norfolk Station, where you’re just a brief 5-minute rideshare up Hampton Boulevard to ODU’s campus.
- Bonus: Tides game ticket holders can ride the Tide for free within two hours of game time.
