Marketing & Communications Assistant

VisitNorfolk is looking for a proactive, self-motivated, well-organized and detail-oriented Marketing Assistant to provide support to the Marketing & Communications department in areas of social media execution and collecting city and partner information.

Responsibilities include:

  • Solicits and compiles information for the calendar of events and makes daily updates to the website calendar; Maintains an inventory of imagery on Crowdriff in support of the public relations, marketing and social media efforts
  • Assists the Digital Content Manager in updating business listings on the VisitNorfolk website; Plans and schedules all posts for VisitNorfolk’s social media channels based on the Digital Content Manager’s content calendar; Assists the Communications Manager in collecting information on attractions, restaurants and other visitor amenities for media inquiries
  • Regularly monitors the engagement happening across social including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and TikTok; Stays on top of social media trends and algorithms; Captures photography and videography to be used across all social media channels
  • May assist in writing, editing, proofreading and researching for PR pitches, press releases, blog articles and other marketing documents; Assists in preparation of marketing and communication reports

Qualifications:

  • Associate or college degree (preferred), technical school degree or equivalent experience in an administrative support field within a marketing, public relations or communications capacity
  • One-year administrative, public relations or marketing experience preferred
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills; highly proficient with a variety of social media outlets; must have excellent knowledge of social media trends and impeccable grammar
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, meet aggressive deadlines and make effective decisions
  • Ability to organize, file, multi-task and handle deadline-oriented projects
  • Able to work flexible hours during FAM trips or special events or assigned projects to occasionally include some nights and/or weekends

Visitor Information Specialist

Hours: Part-time, 10 – 20 hours a week

Position Summary: VisitNorfolk is looking for a dynamic, outgoing individual to represent Norfolk and the surrounding Coastal Virginia area to tourists, visitors and local residents alike from our brand new, state-of-the-art Mobile Visitor Center. This position requires the operation of a company-owned motor vehicle and extensive knowledge of the local area; specifically, the amenities and attractions that the City of Norfolk has to offer. Work involves providing detailed and accurate directions to area hotels, restaurants, attractions and businesses with the use of maps and/or the internet, as well as preparing, stocking and selling merchandise.

This position requires daytime, evening, weekend, and holiday availability based on the event, festival, and conference schedules.

Qualifications: Must be at least 21 years old to apply and have a valid driver’s license. Good communication skills and an outgoing personality are necessary as well as the ability to lift up to 50lbs and stand for extended periods of time. General knowledge of Apple i-products and other basic technology preferred. Customer Service skills and retail experience are also preferred.

Internship Opportunities Available

Marketing/PR Intern:

This position is a hands-on role that works directly with the Communications Manager, Marketing Manager, Content Creator and Director of Marketing and Communications. The intern will assist the team with adding events and editing pages on the VisitNorfolk.com website, in-design projects for the sales team, research on journalists and bloggers, asset gathering for social media and more.

Norfolk Tourism Foundation Intern 

The focus of this internship will be the solicitation of the NTF Annual Gourmet Golf Tournament and procurement of in-kind donations for the silent auction packages, raffle items and other giveaway prizes. Additional duties will include working with the Convention Services & Visitors Information departments. Our goal is for the intern to gain a breadth of knowledge about non-profit fundraising, the Hospitality and Tourism industry, and the City of Norfolk.

Opportunities are available in Convention Services, Marketing, Public Relations and Sales Departments.
