Social Media Engagement Strategist 


Position Summary: 

Develops and executes VisitNorfolk’s strategic social media and digital engagement with input from departmental leadership, develops social voice, manages brand awareness and online reputation via social channels, generates website traffic via curated social content, and encourages engagement in order to further promote Norfolk as a destination for leisure travel and meetings and conventions. Supports City of Norfolk social media campaigns to promote the city as a great place to live, work and play. 

Major Responsibilities: 

Content Management: 

• Maintains the identity of, and provides a consistent voice for VisitNorfolk’s “social space” (i.e.: profile appearance, images, ads, landing pages, etc.); 

• Displays in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, their respective participants (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, etc.) and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios; 

• Administers the creation and publishing of relevant, original, high-quality photo and video content including creation of graphics and images for use across social channels; coordinates with sales and marketing calendars to create and manage a regular social publishing schedule; 

• Proposes, designs and implements social media programs to supplement VisitNorfolk’s marketing and sales campaigns; 

• Monitors, listens and responds effectively to users via the various social media channels; 

• Collaborates with partners, clients and local organizations on their social media content, including the City of Norfolk; 

• Manages tools such as CrowdRiff and Meltwater. 

• Leads efforts to develop strategies to increase engagement and conversion to web visits; and, 

• Curates opportunities to engage local brand influencers and support other initiatives in the creation of authentic Norfolk content. 

Tracking and Reporting: 

• Monitors trends in social media tools, applications, channels, design and strategy to optimize VisitNorfolk’s online presence; 

• Establishes and monitors effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media programs; and, 

• Reviews and reports on effectiveness of campaigns and translates data into recommendations on how to maximize results. 


• Monitors social media trends within the meetings and tourism industry and in general and provides leadership in areas of expertise;

• Provides monthly reports to senior management and other reports as needed or requested; 

• Processes invoices and expense reports in compliance with the Accounting Department’s guidelines; 

• Continually contributes to further the goals of the organization and department; 

• Complies with company policies and procedures; and, 

• Other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing or related field. Three to five years’ experience in social media, online marketing, advertising, web development, or similar field. Effective understanding of latest technologies and rules and regulations related to social media marketing. Skilled on-the-spot communication skills, quick decision making, sound judgment, copywriting and design experience and basic photography and videography skills are required. Strong written and verbal communication skills 

• Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, CrowdRiff, Later, and knowledge of video editing software and Adobe CS Suite are required. 

• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex business concepts, converse with a diverse group of people, and understand management principles and policies. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, tourists, other departments and the general public. 

• Ability to calculate figures and draw reasonable conclusions from those figures. 

• Ability to define problems, collect information, distribute information to appropriate parties, collect data, establish facts and draw reasonable conclusions. 

• Basic understanding of the mission of VisitNorfolk. Basic business principles, knowledge of company policies and procedures. Must have a solid understanding of computers, with sound knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics software programs. Requires excellent communication and people skills.

Administrative Sales Assistant


Position Summary:

Provides principal administrative support to assigned Sales Manager(s). Works fairly independently. May provide clerical support to other personnel.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs general secretarial functions and assists Sales Manager(s) in day-to-day operations of the department.

  • Handles daily correspondence, meeting planning and travel arrangements for Manager(s). Prioritizes and distributes all incoming correspondence, faxes and general mail for Manager(s).

  • Monitors all aspects of the department budget, including preparation of invoices, check requests and purchase orders, verification of expenditures against line items, adjusting of accounts and updating Manager(s) on a monthly basis.

  • Maintains VisitNorfolk Sales Department merchandise including, estimates, orders, inventory and requests.

  • Maintains organized file system (paper and electronic) for department, including accounting records.

  • Assists with departmental projects.

  • Coordinates committee meeting schedules and attendance for all committees supported by the department.

  • Maintains department statistics, ensuring that data is current and correct.

  • Creates various reports, utilizing database(s).

  • Provide front desk relief for receptionist.

  • Ability to lift 30 pounds

  • Project a positive image of Visit Norfolk and display a positive attitude in all internal and external communications.

  • Ability to deal with delicate and controversial matters.


  • Excellent knowledge and functionality in use of office computer software including excel and word. Ability to create reports, graphs, etc.

  • Ability to quickly learn industry-related computer software such as In Design, Adobe and other media programs.

  • Ability to work with managers long distance via email and phone on a regular basis.

  • Strong customer service and business etiquette skills.

  • Work requires a high degree of accuracy, good judgment, excellent oral, proofreading, written communication skills and strong attention to details.

  • Good organizational skills and ability to multi-task

  • Ability to meet deadlines

  • Ability to work in a fast pace environment.

Visitor Information Specialist  

Hours: Part-time, 10 – 20 hours week 

Position Summary: VisitNorfolk is looking for a dynamic, outgoing individual to represent Norfolk and the surrounding Coastal Virginia area to tourists, visitors and local residents alike from our brand new, state-of-the-art Mobile Visitor Center. This position requires the operation of a company owned motor vehicle and extensive knowledge of the local area; specifically, the amenities and attractions that the City of Norfolk has to offer. Work involves providing detailed and accurate directions to area hotels, restaurants, attractions and businesses with the use of maps and/or the internet, as well as preparing, stocking and selling merchandise. 

This position requires weekend, evening, and holiday availability based on event, festival, and conference schedules. 

Qualifications:  Must be at least 21 years old to apply and have a valid driver’s license. Good communication skills and an outgoing personality are necessary as well as the ability to lift up to 50lbs and stand for extensive periods of time. General knowledge of Apple I-products and other basic technology preferred. Customer Service skills and retail experience also preferred.
