Friday, June 19, 2026 will be a red-letter date in Norfolk history as the once-in-a-lifetime Sail250® Virginia Parade of Sail traverses 26 nautical miles in front of thousands of lucky spectators. The event, which is also part of Norfolk’s annual Harborfest, brings a massive international fleet of tall ships, military vessels and ceremonial ships into the region. Friday’s parade will cover portions of the Chesapeake Bay and Elizabeth River from Virginia Beach (7 a.m.) to Norfolk’s Waterside (noon).
The parade starts in the Lynnhaven Roads anchorage off the Lesner Bridge in Virginia Beach, with the first ship departing from the anchorage at 7 a.m. From there, the ships will proceed west through Thimble Shoals Channel, through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, past Old Point Comfort, through Hampton Roads, and up the Elizabeth River. The first ship in the parade will arrive off Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk at noon.
Where To Catch the Action
While Waterside and Town Point Park will be the center of the celebration, there are plenty of excellent viewing spots across Norfolk where you can enjoy the parade while stretching out and getting a unique perspective. Town Point Park & Waterside District
If you want to be in the heart of the action, Downtown Norfolk is the place to be. Ships will pass the waterfront before docking nearby, with Harborfest entertainment, food vendors, live music and festival energy. Based on previous Harborfest events, Town Point Park is the most popular viewing area, so expect the largest crowds and arrive early.
Plum Point Park
For a more relaxed waterfront experience, Plum Point Park offers sweeping Elizabeth River views and plenty of room to spread out. Located upriver from downtown, it gives visitors a scenic vantage point as vessels make their final approach toward Norfolk’s core. This is a strong option for families looking to avoid downtown congestion.
Lambert’s Point / Terminal Area
The head of the parade is expected to pass Lambert’s Point City Park around 11 a.m., making this one of the best spots to catch the ships before they reach downtown. This area provides dramatic views of large vessels moving through the harbor with an industrial-maritime Norfolk backdrop.
Ocean View Beaches
If you’d rather start your day by the Chesapeake Bay, Ocean View gives you an earlier look at the fleet as ships move toward Norfolk. The parade is projected to pass this area around 8:40 a.m. Bring a beach chair and enjoy one of the most unique tall ship viewing experiences anywhere in the region.
Fort Norfolk / Chelsea Waterfront
The Chelsea area near Fort Norfolk offers another smart alternative for visitors who want proximity to downtown without being directly in the busiest festival footprint. You’ll still have great river views while staying slightly removed from peak crowds.
Ghent & Hague Waterfront Areas
Parts of Ghent along the Hague and nearby waterfront edges can offer partial views of vessels moving through the harbor depending on location. Pair your ship-watching with breakfast, coffee or lunch in one of Norfolk’s most historic and scenic neighborhoods.
Parking & Shuttle Tips
With major crowds expected for Sail250® Virginia and Harborfest, visitors should expect traffic delays and limited downtown parking. Public garages in Downtown Norfolk will be available, and event organizers are expected to release additional transportation, shuttle and parking guidance closer to the event date. Pro Tip: Spread Out and Explore Norfolk
The Parade of Sail is visible from far more than just Waterside. Choosing locations like Plum Point Park, Lambert’s Point or Ocean View can mean easier parking, lighter crowds and a memorable perspective on one of America’s biggest maritime celebrations. For a unique view across the river, you can also catch the Elizabeth River Ferry to watch from several points in Portsmouth, Va.
Juneteenth Festivities
Adding to the excitement, Friday, June 19 is also Juneteenth, making for a memorable day of celebration along Norfolk’s waterfront. After watching the Parade of Sail, visitors can continue the festivities at Town Point Park with Juneteenth programming, live entertainment and community celebrations throughout the day. Friday night, music icon Patti LaBelle takes the stage for a special waterfront concert, followed by fireworks over the Elizabeth River, making this one of the biggest and most unforgettable days of the summer in Norfolk.
