NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) announced it will be offering free rides on Monday, Feb. 10 in honor of Transit Equity Day.
The national day of action commemorates the legacy of Rosa Parks and her fight for equality on public transportation.
Transit Equity Day is celebrated on Parks’ birthday, which is Feb. 4. It falls on a Tuesday this year.
HRT will be providing free bus, light rail, ferry, OnDemand ridesharing and paratransit services on Feb. 10, the Monday following her birthday.
“HRT is committed to treating all customers with dignity with the best possible transit experience every day, to every customer,” said William E. Harrell, President and CEO of HRT. “By continuing to offer free fares on this special day for the fourth straight year, we honor the lasting legacy of Rosa Parks and how her courageous act continues to impact transit agencies around the nation.”
Every HRT bus also will have a reserved front seat with a sign honoring Parks’ courage and commitment to civil rights.
