“When There Are Nine” brings together 19 dynamic women and women-identifying artists responding to the legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg through the powerful visual language of her iconic collars. For Ginsburg, the collar was far more than an accessory-it was a symbol, a signal, and a statement. Each jabot she wore communicated intent: dissent, agreement, celebration, resistance. Artists in this exhibition were invited to create a work of 2D or 3D art that reinterprets these collars as contemporary emblems of agency, identity, and the ongoing struggle for equity.
The exhibition’s title references Ginsburg’s famous response to the question, “When will there be enough women on the Supreme Court?” Her answer – “When there are nine”—has become a rallying cry for gender parity and representation. This exhibition expands on that statement, offering a space where creative voices reflect on the systems that shape women’s lives and the futures they are forging.
