Malcolm-Jamal Warner is an American actor, director, and musician. In 1982 Warner made his TV debut, appearing in an episode of the mystery series Matt Houston. He was cast in several other programs before landing a role on The Cosby Show. He soon became familiar to television audiences as Theo Huxtable, one of the five children of the show’s lead characters, played by Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad. For his performance as the likable Theo, Warner earned an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986. In addition to acting on the show—which ran from 1984 to 1992—he also directed several episodes.

Warner later starred in the television series Here and Now (1992–93), playing a volunteer at a youth center, and Malcolm & Eddie (1996–2000), about two best friends. For the latter show, he also directed 17 episodes. Warner later produced and starred in the television series Reed Between the Lines (2011–15), a comedy about a married couple juggling their work and personal lives. In 2012 he won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. In addition, Warner costarred in the TV movies The Father Clements Story (1987), about a priest’s efforts to adopt a troubled teen; Tyson (1995), a biopic about boxer Mike Tyson; and The Tuskegee Airmen (1995), a World War II drama centering on the first African American flying unit in the U.S. military.

Warner is also a musician, especially known as a spoken-word artist. With his jazz band Miles Long, he recorded the albums The Miles Long Mixtape (2004), Love & Other Social Issues (2007), and Selfless (2015). Warner’s Hiding in Plain View (2022) earned a Grammy Award nomination for best spoken-word poetry album. He also collaborated with other musicians, and in 2015 he shared the Grammy for best traditional R&B performance with the band the Robert Glasper Experiment and singer Lalah Hathaway for their rendition of the 1973 Stevie Wonder song “Jesus Children of America.” The single featured Warner’s spoken-word performance and Hathaway’s vocals.

Justin Furstenfeld is the creative force behind Blue October, a multi-platinum band that has sold millions of albums and singles worldwide and garnered over a billion streams. Known for his poetic storytelling and emotional depth, Furstenfeld has written and recorded over 18 Top 40 hits, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated global following. Over the course of his career, he has recorded 16 studio albums: 13 with Blue October, 2 solo, and 1 with Harvard of the South, as well as two concert films, Argue With A Tree and Things We Do At Night and a documentary; Get Back Up.

From the beginning, Furstenfeld set Blue October apart with their emotionally raw and introspective sound. Initially drawing inspiration from bands like The Cure and Radiohead, he wove deeply personal themes of love, loss, addiction, and redemption into his songwriting, creating anthemic yet intimate tracks that fans describe as “shimmering rock songs with haunting lyrics.” His live performances are often described as arm hair-raising, as they channel unfiltered emotion and forge an unparalleled connection with audiences.

Furstenfeld’s life story is one of transformation. Once grappling with addiction and mental health struggles, he has emerged as a vocal advocate for sobriety and emotional well-being. His journey is chronicled in the acclaimed 2020 documentary Get Back Up, which provides an unflinching look at his struggles and triumphs. Through honesty and vulnerability, Furstenfeld has inspired countless fans by proving that change is not only possible but life changing.

For the past 15 years, Furstenfeld’s one-man shows, Open Book, have been celebrated for their transformative, heartfelt experiences. These performances combine acoustic renditions with deeply personal storytelling, offering fans an immersive look into his music and life. His reality-focused, unfiltered writing addresses the darker corners of life while finding hope and beauty, breaking down barriers between artist and audience. His new one-man show, I Laugh At Myself, focuses on his continuing journey from 2013 to the present, showcasing his ongoing transformation and dedication to becoming the best version of himself each day.

In 2024, Furstenfeld expanded his artistic expression by launching his lifestyle brand, Furstenfeld, and personally crafting four unique parfums. Each fragrance embodies his signature emotional depth and storytelling, offering a sensory experience that mirrors the raw power of his music. The brand, described as “a symphony for the senses,” is available at www.furstenfeld.com, inviting fans to step into an evocative new world that blends music and perfumery.

In addition to his music and entrepreneurial pursuits, Furstenfeld is an accomplished author. His first book, Crazy Making, was published in 2009, and his second, I Laugh At Myself, is set for release in Spring 2025. Justin Furstenfeld’s journey is a testament to the enduring impact of authenticity, creativity, and his relentless dedication to personal and artistic growth.

Church Street Jazz Series Kim and Kayla Waters

January 4 2025

8:00 PM
Attucks Theatre 1010 Church St. Norfolk, VA 23510 info@sevenvenues.com, 757-664-6464 Price: $50 - $80 plus applicable fees

With a career that has spanned close to four decades, the indefatigable Kim Waters is still inspired. “I have been recording for 35 years and I love it.  It’s my passion and it is all that I’ve ever done. There are so many great young guns coming along that I have to stay at the top of my game! I am blessed that I was trained on the straight-ahead side of things which gave me a great foundation.” Waters’ keen harmonic sense, tasteful and soulful phrasing, and fluid melodic sensibilities have made him one the premiere architects of Contemporary Jazz.

The Maryland-born Renaissance man was inspired early on in his career by such Jazz luminaries as Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, George Benson, Grover Washington Jr., and Cannonball Adderley. Waters picked up his first instrument, the violin, at the age of eight.  “That didn’t go over well with the fellas,” says Waters, who later found his calling on the alto and soprano saxophones at 13. Shortly afterward he began playing in a band with his brothers, James (who he still performs with) and Eric, and his old friend, pianist Cyrus Chestnut. Over the years, Kim Waters has been called on to perform with or open shows for the best including Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Phyllis Hyman, Teddy Riley and Guy, and Gerald Albright to name a few.

Kim Waters exudes a knowing confidence and cool calm. When the suave and debonair saxophonist is not making music, he enjoys riding his electric bikes and walking three to four miles a day. He says it is a spiritual thing. “It helps me clear my head and it gives me a chance to talk with myself and keep my mind off the music which is a really hard thing to do when you are always thinking about it!” Waters has learned a thing or two about life from his grandmother that keeps his life and music in focus. “My grandmother used to always say that getting upset and stressing about things won’t change anything. I have learned that you just have to stay even keel and let things work themselves out.”

This formula has catapulted him to the top of the charts time and time again and has made him one of the biggest-selling saxophonists to date. JazzTimes Magazine has declared, “Waters is simply one of the planet’s best saxophonists, The Washington Post has likened Waters to “A romantic pied piper out on a long evening stroll.” The prolific saxophonist, composer, and producer has enjoyed a career of longevity that is rare. Waters’ Zen-like approach to his life and artistry is simple. ”

Kayla Waters, a pianist, singer, and composer, is a dynamic, classically-trained, crossover jazz performer.

Artistically poised pianist Kayla Waters is a chart-topping recording artist, composer, producer, and film scorer. After signing a new record deal with Shanachie Records, Kayla victoriously releases her brand new musical offering Presence, a life-giving creative work alluding to the beauty of the ocean and God’s abundant love. Beautifully composed and eloquently written, Presence is a stunning addition to her repertoire following albums Coevolve and Apogee. As a five-time Billboard and Mediabase number one artist {I Am, Zephyr, Full Bloom, Open Portals, and Undulation}, Kayla made history by becoming the first female pianist to reign atop the charts for six consecutive weeks.

Waters was born into a musical family. Her father Kim Waters, an acclaimed smooth jazz saxophonist, introduced her to music. She studied classical piano from the age of six and later earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at Howard University. She made her professional debut on several albums of her father before she launched her career. Recently, Kayla’s musical achievements have been extolled on prestigious platforms, as she was honored with the Rising Star in Jazz Award {Black Women in Jazz and the Arts Foundation of Atlanta} and the Best Jazz Artist Award {The Wammies & The Musicianship} in Washington, DC where she is based.

The spotlight has humbly created opportunities for Kayla to play and perform with music legends and prominent recording artists including Stevie Wonder, Patrice Rushen, Avery*Sunshine, Maysa Leak, Sheila E., and Dave Koz to name a few. Passionately alluring, Kayla gracefully flourishes on stage, having played exhilarating and exuberant concerts at intimate venues, illustrious theaters and acclaimed festivals worldwide. Laced with purpose, the luminous artist shined brightly on national television at BET’s acclaimed “Black Girls Rock” awards show, revealing her tenacity and musical diversity by performing with legend Gladys Knight, Marsha Ambrosius, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Imani Uzuri. Kayla was also graciously invited to be a featured keyboardist at the inaugural Fender Rhodes Fest in Los Angeles alongside a host of music contemporaries.
