Indigenous Crafts on the Elizabeth River

July 12 2025

11:00 a.m. - 2:15 p.m.
Elizabeth River Project - Ryan Resilience Lab 4610 Colley Ave, Norfolk, VA 23508, USA

Rivers are lifelines, especially here in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. But beyond the practical benefits they provide, waterways are a vital element of the Chesapeake’s rich cultural history. How do people survive using the natural resources found here in the Chesapeake Bay? How do rivers influence the Chesapeake Bay’s history and culture?

With this workshop, we will join members of the Nansemond Indian Nation and park rangers from the National Park Service to learn about the Indigenous peoples of the Chesapeake Bay and their reliance on waterways.

  • Net Demonstrations – Watch and learn how Indigenous communities have historically crafted and used fishing nets for catching fish and other river life. Try your hand at weaving techniques passed down through generations.
  • Traditional Games – Engage in fun and challenging games played by Indigenous peoples, offering insight into culture, strategy, and teamwork. Discover how these activities built community bonds and taught essential survival skills.
  • Bracelet Making with Plant-Based Cordage – Craft a beautiful, nature-inspired bracelet using traditional plant-based fibers. Learn how Indigenous artisans historically harvested, processed, and braided natural materials to create strong, functional cordage for jewelry, tools, and everyday use.

Ryan Resilience Lab Tours

Are you curious about how we can live in harmony with nature and adapt to the challenges of climate change? Do you want to see how cutting-edge design and technology can create a resilient and sustainable urban coastal community? Do you want to learn more about the Elizabeth River Project and its vision for the future?

Join the Elizabeth River Project for a tour of our new globally significant resilience model, the Ryan Resilience Lab. This state-of-the-art building showcases how we can protect both the ecosystem and humans as sea levels rise, incorporating replicable, environmentally sustainable design and construction.

  • Continuous rain gardens that filter stormwater runoff
  • Solar panels and batteries that aim for net-zero energy consumption
  • Floating entry pavilion that rises and falls with the tide
  • Living shoreline of restored wetlands, oysters, and native plants
  • River Room that hosts workshops, events, and exhibits
  • Toilets that flush with 100% harvested rainwater

The Ryan Resilience Lab is also the key anchor for the Eco-District, a collaborative effort to transform the northern part of Norfolk’s Colley Avenue near Knitting Mill Creek into an innovation corridor that fosters economic development, social equity, and environmental stewardship.

During the tour, you will get to see the inside and outside of the building, learn about its features and functions, and hear from our staff and volunteers about the organization’s work and goals.

The tours are free and open to the public, but space is limited and pre-registration is appreciated. Donations are always appreciated to support a healthy Elizabeth River. We look forward to seeing you soon!

If you cannot join us on our regular tour dates and times, or if you would like to arrange a special tour for your group, please reach out to Pam Northam at pnortham@elizabethriver.org.
