Norfolk Department of Human Services’ Community Engagement Street Team (CEST) is back on the road in June, bringing access to benefits programs, public assistance and support services to residents where they are – in the neighborhoods!

Throughout June, the Community Engagement Street Team (CEST) is partnered with Norfolk Housing and Redevelopment Authority (NRHA) to pull up in neighborhoods across the City, bringing resources directly to residents.

Resources include:

  • Benefits Applications
  • Tangible Resources (food, water, personal care items, etc.)
  • Referrals for Service
  • Case Management Assistance
  • Support and Additional Help

Bark in the Park with Friends of NACC

Join Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center at Bark in the Park with the Norfolk Tides.

On Tuesday, June 10, enjoy a game with your four-legged friends, with all proceeds from dog tickets donated to Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center! One of our caretakers will be throwing out the first pitch!
Dog tickets are $5 per dog, with proceeds benefiting the animals at Norfolk Animal Care Center.
All fans entering Harbor Park with their dog must complete the 2025 Bark in the Park Waiver.

Waggin' Readin' Craftin' with NACC & NPL

Get ready for a “paws-itively” awesome summer party! Join Norfolk Animal Care Center and Norfolk Public Library for “Waggin’ Readin’ & Craftin’,” a free, family-friendly event packed with animal fun, summer reading and creative crafts on June 7, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch Library (111 W. Ocean View Ave.).

Waggin’ means that NACC’s mobile adoption unit, Waggin’ Wheels, will be at the library for an exciting adoption event and pet food drive. Participants are encouraged to donate pet food – any size, flavor, wet, dry, even treats – to support the Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center Pet Pantry.

Readin’ celebrates the beginning of NPL’s annual Summer Reading Program, which kicks off on June 7. Participants can sign up at the branch to log minutes and win prizes.

Craftin’ includes pet bandana making in Pretlow’s RMP Maker Studio to benefit NACC and pet photos with some of NACC’s adorable, adoptable animals and more. This event will kick off June’s Sew-4-Service month, where participants can sew pet beds for animals in need. Those interested can register for a slot Tuesdays – Fridays in June at norfolk.libcal.com.

Anyone who adopts a dog or cat from NACC during the month of June will receive a FREE, custom-made pet tag for their new furry friend, courtesy of the RMP Maker Studio.

UniverSoul Circus

UniverSoul Circus returns to the Hampton Roads region this week with its jaw-dropping stunts, aerialists, fire breathers, stilt dancers and the coolest clowns around! The internationally acclaimed circus – which opens Thursday (June 5) at 7 p.m. under the big top next to Military Circle Mall – brings together world-class talent in a high-energy, interactive cultural celebration filled with vibrant music, dance, costumes, comedy and more. The show will run through June 22.

Opening night kicks off with a special “City of Norfolk”-themed evening – featuring Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander – plus a pre-show performance by the New Generation Marching Band at 6:30 p.m. The fun continues Friday with “Pastors United Night” plus a pre-show performance by Dance Dimensions. Dance Team and Significant Dream Queenz will provide entertainment before the noon show, and the Nurvouz Dance Team and Karma Cuties will perform before the noon show on Sunday.
