Virtual Event: Haven or Hell? Jews in the Philippines During WWII

April 14 2026

8:45 a.m. - 9:45 a.m.
Online event Make sure to register, Price: Free
Writer Sandra Lanman shares the story of her grandmother Elsie, one of 1,300 Jewish refugees who came to the Philippines to avoid persecution in Europe only to face new trials and terrors during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in WWII in this special program for Yom HaShoah.

On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. EST, the MacArthur Memorial will present a free virtual lecture in honor of Yom HaShoah with writer and researcher Sandra Lanman about her grandmother Elsie, one of 1,300 Jewish refugees who came to the Philippines to avoid persecution in Europe only to face new trials and terrors during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in World War II.

For years, Sandra Lanman knew her grandmother Elsie had escaped Germany to the Philippines only to lose her husband Gunther in the brutal Battle of Manila at the end of World War II. Aside from a few photos and family stories, she knew little else. In 2019, a serendipitous encounter on Facebook led her to Gunther’s great-nephew and a trove of photos of Elsie and Gunther in Manila. The discovery sparked her interest in the history of this little-known Jewish sanctuary from the Holocaust. Through film, photos and Elsie’s own words, Sandy’s presentation tells the story of the rescue of 1,300 European Jews and the challenges and terrors they faced under the Japanese occupation during World War II.

Sandra Lanman is an award-winning writer and public relations professional in New Jersey. She began her career as a staff writer for The Home News, a NJ daily, where she won awards for health, medical and human interest writing. She later worked as a public relations professional in the arts and public television, and as a director of media relations for Rutgers University, winning national recognition for several projects, including crisis communication following 9/11. She has been a consultant and writer serving clients in higher education, music and the nonprofit sector, and has volunteered with organizations focused on the environment and hunger.  Sandra holds a bachelor’s degree in English and master’s in communication and information studies, both from Rutgers University.

This virtual presentation will include a Q&A session. This event is free and open to the public.

Nadine rose from a childhood in Kansas during the Great Depression to break gender barriers in the history of American flight to become a leader in her field, serving as a pilot, instructor, and one of the few women to fly a fighter plane during WWII.

Dr. Raquel R. Ramsey is the widow of Col. Edwin P. Ramsey, 26th Cavalry PS who led the Last Mounted Horse Cavalry Charge in U.S. Army history and Commander of the East Central Luzon Guerilla Forces as he fought four years behind enemy lines. Col. Ramsey graduated from Oklahoma Military Academy in 1937 and from OU College of Law in 1952 after returning from the war. Ed Ramsey passed away last March 7, 2013 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on June 28, 2013. Ed and Raquel were married for 34 wonderful years. She also taught English at the Yeshiva University High Schools of Los Angeles and International School in Manila. She has also been an instructor in several subjects at the University of Santo Tomas, where she obtained her degrees. Raqui, as most people know her, has been actively engaged in several military organizations with Col. Ramsey like the Philippine Scouts Heritage Society, The U.S. Cavalry Association and on June 6, 2015 became an honorary cadet at the Oklahoma Military Academy where her husband is in the Hall of Fame. In 2018, she received the Congressional Gold Medal on behalf of her husband at the PSHS reunion.

Dr. Ramsey is the Executive Producer of “NEVER SURRENDER: THE ED RAMSEY STORY” by Vanilla Fire Productions which premiered on Nov. 13, 2016 at the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance. She has been involved with the promotion of her husband’s book, “Lieutenant Ramsey’s War” which was published in 1990 and just completed his sister’s book, “TAKING FLIGHT: THE NADINE RAMSEY STORY” which will be published in the fall of 2020 by the University of Kansas Press. Raqui now carries Ed and Nadine’s legacy, doing book signings and media appearances nationwide. She completed the documentary with Vanilla Fire Productions again as Executive Producer of “TAKING FLIGHT: THE NADINE RAMSEY STORY” for a Premiere on Nov 16, 2025 at the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance in LA. Screenings will be held in many Museums and Libraries all over the U.S.
