The spectacular, Grammy-Award winning Soweto Gospel Choir will perform on Monday, December 3, kicking off the holiday season in Norfolk! Hailing from the town of Soweto (South West Township), the birthplace of South Africa’s democratic movement's struggle for freedom, Soweto Gospel Choir have thrilled audiences around the world with their stunning blend of African gospel, freedom songs, and international classics. Combining earthy rhythms and rich harmonies, sung in six of South Africa’s eleven official languages as well as English, this special occasion promises to be a moving performance that will uplift the soul.

The Soweto Gospel Choir members are Ambassadors for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and have performed with some of the biggest names in music and for some of the most influential people in the world. In July 2018, in honor of Mandela’s 100th birthday, the choir performed at the annual Nelson Mandela Lecture ahead of Former US President Barack Obama’s remarks.

The concert will be performed at Norfolk’s Historic First Baptist Church. The church was dedicated in 1906 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located on Bute Street in Downtown Norfolk, the Romanesque Revival-style church has a richly ornamented façade. The Church is home to Reaching Educationally Aspiring Youth (READY) Academy and continues to be a ministry of caring to the community.

Tickets will be available online at www.vafest.org, by phone at 757-282-2822, or in person at the Virginia Arts Festival Box Office at 440 Bank St., Norfolk. Group tickets are also available by calling 757-282-2819.
