Norfolk, VA: The Norfolk Street Choir Project is pleased to present Neighbors, an exhibition of selected portraits featuring
individuals impacted by homelessness. The works by photographer Glen McClure will be showing from October 13—December 13,
2022, at Slover Library, 235 E Plume St, Norfolk, VA. Meet the artist and enjoy a performance by the Norfolk Street Choir on
Thursday, Oct 13 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Slover Library Forum. The event is open to the public.
Photographer Glen McClure’s striking black and white portraits celebrate everyday people from every walk of life.
A Virginia native and life-long resident of Norfolk, McClure’s latest project, Neighbors, is a collaborative effort with the Norfolk
Street Choir Project, a non-profit organization located in downtown Norfolk, providing encouragement and support to our
vulnerable neighbors through service and arts opportunities. Founding Artistic Director, Robert Shoup shares, “We routinely witness
small miracles of hope and possibility when our community gathers. When our neighbors come for a meal, or a shower, or to see a
doctor or find some clothes, or to sing or draw or paint… we encounter beautiful people with ideas, perspectives and gifts.
“We envision a caring city where vulnerable persons are encouraged and affirmed through the arts.”
—The Norfolk Street Choir Project
Seeking a way to share with the larger community the warm and welcoming spirit of the Norfolk Street Choir Project and the good
people it serves, McClure set out to shed a respectful and revealing light on the community through the compelling black and white
portraits he creates. Over the course of several months, McClure has photographed 43 individuals, capturing the beauty and essence
of the Street Choir Project community. According to NSCP’s Executive Director, Stephanie Van Leeuwen, the goal of Neighbors “has
always been to honor our neighbors’ stories and lives and remind the broader community of the very human elements we all share.”
An exhibition catalogue containing all 43 of McClure’s Norfolk Street Choir Project portraits will be available for purchase at the
public opening, Thursday, Oct 13, 2022 at Slover Library Forum, 235 E Plume St, Norfolk or through the Norfolk Street Choir website.

ABOUT
Glen McClure is a longtime professional photographer, most recently recognized for his stunning landscape photography of the West
Ireland coast and his empathic portraits of “regular folks” all over the world. His other efforts at collective portraits include regional
watermen, shipbuilders and Virginia residents; farther afield, he has made portrait collections in Italy, Ireland, Sicily, France, Costa
Rica and Cuba. McClure’s photographs are held in both private and public collections, including the Chrysler Museum of Art;
Taubman Museum; Polaroid Collection and Mariners Museum.
The Norfolk Street Choir Project has been engaging vulnerable neighbors in Norfolk since 2016, offering a safe and affirming
environment and an opportunity to build community and musical performances of wonder and worth to southeastern Virginia. At
the core of its work is providing opportunities for individuals, many of whom are affected by homelessness, to express themselves
through music and art, and a platform from which neighbors – who are too frequently disregarded – can be seen and heard.
