Screening of "Against the Current" at "Burden of the Beast"

September 23 2025

8:00 p.m
Hermitage Museum and Gardens 7637 North Shore Road, Norfolk, VA 23505 Price: FREE
Join us at the Goode Theater for a special exhibition event of the Hermitage Museum’s “Burden of the Beast” with a FREE screening of our award-winning documentary, “Against the Current.”
“Against the Current” provides a powerful look at how residents of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, like many coastal towns, are subject to rising sea waters and the challenges it has on their lives and livelihood.
The themes of “Burden of the Beast” echo the sentiments of our documentary and Hermitage’s ecological missions in Walker Babington’s whimsical art.
His artwork explores themes of the human experience and can be seen as modern day folklore, telling cautionary tales relevant to 21st century life.
Amongst many other artworks, the exhibition will feature a striking 32-foot-tall sculpture crafted from salvaged materials including driftwood, hurricane debris, and remnants of New Orleans carnival floats.

The sculpture, shaped like a bison carrying a house structure on its back, serves as a profound symbol of climate change and rising sea levels.

Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus

George Frideric Handel: Messiah

It’s Southeastern Virginia’s grandest Messiah! Conducted this year by Music Director Eric Jacobsen, Handel’s most famous work comes to life with the full Christmas section along with selections from the second and third parts, including the iconic Hallelujah chorus! This sacred masterpiece will hearten and warm the spirit this holiday season.

Celebrating his fifth season, Eric Jacobsen serves as the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s twelfth Music Director.  He is also artistic director and co-founder of The Knights, the uniquely adventurous NYC-based chamber orchestra, and Music Director of the Orlando Philharmonic. In addition to conducting, Eric is a dedicated chamber musician (cello) and is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.

The 25/26 season marks the 36th anniversary of the Virginia Symphony Chorus, and its twenty-ninth under the direction of Chorusmaster Robert Shoup.  In addition to regular appearances with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the chorus has performed to sold-out houses as far afield as Prague, Vienna, Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Salzburg and closer to home at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
