Best Restaurants Near ODU

Mouthwatering cuisine can be found throughout all of Norfolk’s diverse neighborhoods. While Downtown may be well known for great eats, the restaurants around Old Dominion University (ODU) stand out on their own as delicious options. Whether you’re a current student, alumni back for a football game or just passing through the area, check out these local eats and see why ODU students can’t get enough of the best restaurants near ODU and the Larchmont neighborhood.

Bakehouse at Elation

Nothing goes together like pizza and beer. We suggest elevating these options at Norfolk’s own Elation Brewing. In addition to stellar brews in a welcoming atmosphere, you can enjoy a straight-from-the-wood-fired-oven pie courtesy of Bakehouse, located right on site. We suggest the Fungi Bianchi, where cremini and oyster mushrooms steal the show, paired with a Larchmont Lager.

Borjo Coffeehouse

Borjo is an ideal, locally-owned option located right on Monarch Way. Along with a fairly serious coffee selection, they offer breakfast sandwiches, wraps, salads and bagels.

Chorizo Mexican Eatery

Chorizo is a quaint Mexican spot with a modern twist. Their tortillas are made from scratch, they use fresh juice for their margaritas, and they cook al pastor authentically on a spit. Chorizo is famous for their “heartbreakingly good” tacos that are similar to traditional Mexican street tacos found on almost any intersection south of the border, bringing the true flavors of Mexico to Norfolk.

Coach House Bar and Grill

Coach House offers an inviting bar, spacious dining room and a covered outdoor patio. The menu features contemporary American cuisine with delectable dishes, from savory appetizers to sweet desserts. Start your meal with warm Gulf shrimp scampi dip or oysters Rockefeller. Then, enjoy a unique main dish such as Faroe Island salmon, Creole étouffée or bison meatloaf. Be sure to save room for dessert and indulge in either espresso or vanilla creme brulee.

Cogan’s Pizza North

Cogans North is a hometown favorite offering some of the best artisanal pizza in town, with seven different sauces and over 50 unique toppings to choose from, including specialities like shiitake mushrooms, prosciutto and even vegan faux meats. And, who doesn’t love to pair pizza with beer? Lucky for you, Cogans has 33 beers on tap. They offer an outdoor rooftop, two pool tables and a spacious bar with plenty of seating to accommodate all your friends. Hang out here to cheer on your favorite sports team or stop by for happy hour after classes!

Craft on Colley

Enjoy dining and craft cocktails in a casually-upscale yet affordable destination for contemporary American fare. Located right on Colley, Craft specializes in the freshest seafood, prime meats, delicious burgers, craft beers and brunch featuring bloody marys, mimosas and bubbly. Guests of this welcoming spot with open-air dining and overly spacious covered deck will find themselves not wanting to leave this fun and attractive day-drinking gem.

Del Vecchios

This pizzeria prepares their pies with passion and then bakes them to perfection for your enjoyment. Del Vecchios’ menu has multiple pizza styles that range from a classic New York hand-tossed pizza with wide and easily foldable slices to a deep-dish Chicago style pie stuffed to the brim with toppings. Opt for a calzone or stromboli, but save room for dessert. Their chocolate dipped cannoli and cinnamon knots are a perfect end to any Italian meal. Check out their dollar slices offered every day between 2–5 p.m. It’s no wonder Del Vecchios is an ODU icon.

Fellini’s

Be a part of the family at Fellini’s, a local favorite for over 30 years. This traditional Italian restaurant is family-owned and prides itself on creating a family-friendly atmosphere, making it the perfect place to go when your relatives or friends are in town. The kitchen at Fellini’s is open-concept so you can watch the skilled chefs prepare the delicious food right before your eyes. Fellini’s emphasizes fresh ingredients and lots of flavor and is never shy with the garlic. Try their classic chicken or eggplant parmesan with housemade marinara sauce topped with provolone cheese and served with a side of fresh linguine.

Hair of the Dog Eatery

We don’t judge what time you roll out of bed, but when you do, head to Hair of the Dog at ODU. They offer breakfast dishes all day long and dish out rotating flavors of mimosa flights depending on the season. Order their breakfast flatbread, topped with sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, mixed cheese, green onions and bacon, or devour an order of their Cookie Dough Pancakes.

Hank’s Filling Station

For anyone who enjoys cracking a cold one at noon, head to Hank’s. Create some fun memories through their daytime events like their Backyard BBQs, Sunday Fundays or Holiday Wine Fest. Hank’s is a great spot for friends to gather, as they have a fully equipped backyard with life-sized lawn games, fire pits, corn hole boards and a stage for their live music performances. While here, sip on a local brew or bourbon cocktail and munch on some of their delicious meats that are smoked or cured in-house.

La Herradura Mexican Restaurant & Cantina

La Herradura is located on Monarch Way in the heart of ODU. The locals come for the refreshing margaritas and stay for the locally sourced Mexican cuisine. The Texas fajitas are a hit, always sizzling hot and made with grilled chicken, beef or shrimp and mixed vegetables. Or, stop in for Margarita Mondays for discounted margs!

Mack’s Barge

Mack’s large outdoor deck, directly on the water, makes it one of the best spots for outdoor dining. Dig into one of their many juicy burgers, creamy crab dip or oysters Rockefeller (oysters topped with a creamy blend of bacon, spinach and parmesan), making it a true crowd pleaser. As for their nightlife, head next door or walk along the back deck to Mack’s Shack. Here you can play pool, catch a game on TV or just hang out with a few drinks in hand.

Perfectly Frank

Located in the University Village on Monarch Way, Perfectly Frank (or PFranks, a nickname given by its regulars) has become a staple for Norfolk locals. Perfectly Frank keeps it fun and fresh, offering specials each day of the week including discounted sammies or unique chef suggestions that they add to their ‘Bored Board.’ From their delicious hot sandwiches like the chicken barbecue, to a variety of burgers and melts, this is not your average hamburger and hotdog joint. Perfectly Frank offers a hometown feel and a unique place to grab a quick, yet delicious bite to eat.

Sam’s Texas Sub Shop

Featured in Season One of City with Bite, Sam’s Texas Sub Shop is a beloved hole-in-the-wall, mom and pop restaurant serving up some of the best sub sandwiches in the city. Grab a sub in between classes, or have a couple pre-made for you to take along to a tailgate. If you order their Black & Blue, you won’t regret it! It’s made with Sam’s homemade BBQ sauce, brisket, mushrooms and onions, laid down onto delicious sub bread and topped with bleu cheese and Cajun seasoning, which is then baked at 500 degrees, melting that cheese perfectly. Its location is set back off the road and squeezed in between Cogans and Hanks Filling Station, so be careful not to miss it!

Starving Artist Café

Where palette meets palate, Starving Artist Café originally set out to be a gathering place for painters, photographers and visual artists of all kinds. It wasn’t long before patrons suggested that a café would be a great addition to this gallery. Now, you can dine among works of local art and occasional live music, while enjoying the café’s breakfast and lunch menu. Dig in to their delectable Monte Cristo sandwich or veggie wrap on their flower-filled front porch, and wash it down with a delicious latte or bloody Mary.

The Dirty Buffalo

The Dirty Buffalo is a family-owned restaurant operated by New York native and ODU alum Russell Gilbert. Here, you can enjoy authentic Buffalo NY-style chicken wings with a wide array of sauces to choose from, like mango habanero, spicy garlic parmesan or their sauce of the month, which can range from strawbanero BBQ to sweet sriracha. Dirty Buffalo is the perfect spot to hang out and grab a beer and a bite to eat with your favorite people.

The History of Naval Station Norfolk

Ten years before the Naval Operating Base (today known as Naval Station Norfolk) was built, the waterfront location was the site of the original 1907 Jamestown Exposition. The exposition was one of the many world’s fairs that were popular in America during that time. Commemorating the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown in the Virginia Colony, it was attended by President Theadore Roosevelt, dignitaries and businessmen; even Mark Twain and Booker T. Washington paid a visit. Popular exhibits included a relief model of the Panama Canal, a Wild West show, a re-creation of the then-recent San Francisco earthquake and the most popular—a re-creation of the Battle of Hampton Roads, the first battle between two ironclad warships. By the end of 1907, the Exposition closed, and a decade later, not long after the United States entered World War I, a bill was passed for the purchase of the land, and money was set aside for the development of the base. By 1918, there were 34,000 enlisted men at the base.

When World War II began in Europe in 1939, new facilities were built, including new runways for aircraft and ramps for seaplanes (then known as Naval Air Station Norfolk.) Additional acreage was acquired,
and the air station had become a central airfield for operations, contributing to end the war because of the training it provided to naval air units. In 1968, the Naval Air Station was given a major role in John F. Kennedy’s vision of putting a man on the moon. The air station became Recovery Control Center Atlantic, which provided command, control and communications for the ships and aircraft that participated in the recovery operations of Apollo 7.

In the 1990s, the Navy began reducing shore installations to help with operating costs. Due to this, the Navy merged the separate Naval Station Norfolk and Naval Air Station Norfolk into a single installation to be called Naval Station Norfolk, which became official in early 1999. Following the attack on USS Cole and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the base had some major upgrades to its security gates. In January 2017, Naval Station Norfolk celebrated its centennial at the Pennsylvania House, one of the historical structures built for the Jamestown Exposition.

This coastal-themed coffee shop features light to medium roasted beans featured in your favorite caffeinated beverages like lattes, espressos cappuccinos and cold beverages too. The shop also features bagged coffee beans for sale and a sweet assortment of baked goods—all overlooking the beautiful Elizabeth River.

Rich port Coffee

150 W. Main St.

Rich Port Coffee was founded on the age old ritual of brewing and savoring coffee. Their passion is to deliver a coffee that engages the senses and creates an experience.

Three Ships Coffee

400 Granby St.

Located in Assembly, Three Ships Coffee is a small group of passionate coffee enthusiasts. They source the best coffee they can get their hands on and bring it home to Hampton Roads.

Ghent

Café Stella

1907 Colonial Ave.

Café Stella is one of the first coffee shops to pop up in Norfolk. The shop continues to produce tasty house blends and an atmosphere that’s welcoming and happening. All of their roastings are done in-house, which makes for delicious classic coffee drinks while their sweet treats are all baked from scratch. You’ll find lots of comfortable seating, lots of regulars and a homey ambiance.

Elliot’s Fair Grounds

806 Baldwin Ave.

Norfolk’s oldest independent coffee shop, Elliot’s Fair Grounds offers fair trade coffee, plus assorted pastries in a homey atmosphere. Bonus: they’re located right above Eleanor’s feminist bookstore and bottle shop, so you can pick out a great book to enjoy with a great cup of joe.

Equinox Coffee Co.

2800 Colley Ave.

This corner café is aesthetically pleasing with natural sunlight that beams through the windows complemented by modern rustic décor. Owner TJ Harrell explains that “Equinox represents the balance of night and day, and applying that balance to our everyday lifestyle is what we want to represent.” You will experience this lifestyle in the atmosphere and drinks. Their specialty lattes change with the seasons and are created with house-made syrups and dashed with spices. Grab a seat at the bar while sipping on a classic cappuccino and soaking up the feel-good vibes.

Kobros Coffee

419 W 21st St.

Twin brothers Erik and Sean grew up in Orlando, Florida before both joining the military. They always had a love for coffee, but their extensive travels around the world broadened their appetite and amplified their appreciation for the coffee bean. Now veterans, they are creating some of the most tasteful and compelling lattes in our city. While they have rotating seasonal latte flavors like Maple Squash or Camp Crystal Lake S’mores latte, they also always have some sort of citrus flavored latte on hand. This citrus element is incorporated as a tribute to their original home in the sunshine state. While their coffee shop is bursting with plants, they are extremely accommodating and friendly. It’s hard not to be an avid Kobros coffee drinker.

Chelsea

Vessel Craft Coffee

1229 W. Olney Road

Sarah Cowherd’s decision to open Vessel stemmed from her background visiting a small coffee farm in Nicaragua as a teen on Medical Missions Trips. This once online-only business started out in Selden Market (a market in Norfolk that provides local entrepreneurs with a supportive space to develop their small business) and has now moved to Norfolk’s Chelsea neighborhood. In addition to delicious food offerings (breakfast burritos, anyone?) Vessel features a unique menu of sought-after beverages including cold brew nitro on draft, fun flavors of lattes plus a variety of teas.

Freemason

Cure Coffeehouse

503 Botetourt St.

Cure Coffeehouse, a Norfolk staple, has an astounding selection of carefully crafted beverages. Located among the cobblestone streets of Norfolk and set in a historical building, Cure is constantly putting out exciting drink menus for both cocktails and coffee! Sip on a lavender mocha latte, order an avocado toast, and stroll the streets of Freemason. Check their Instagram for their latest seasonal flavored lattes and monthly events.

Larchmont/Lochhaven

Borjo Coffeehouse

4416 Monarch Way

Located near ODU’s campus, Borjo offers fairly serious coffee, breakfast sandwiches, wraps, salads and bagels.

Voyager Cold Brew Coffee

5106 Colley Ave.

Crafted in Norfolk, this 100% Hawaiian single origin coffee is exceptionally pleasing. Their selection of nitro cold brew coffees will wake you up in the most delicious way. They also have a tempting menu of hot drinks including dark chocolate latte, toffee nut latte and a tasty flat white.

Ocean View/East Beach

Coaster Coffee

8418 Tidewater Dr.

Coaster Coffee is a nonprofit, community-driven coffee house in the Ocean View neighborhood of Norfolk. The owners decided to incorporate a bit of Norfolk history in their name by paying homage to Ocean View’s now defunct amusement park, which had roller coasters as a main attraction. While you no longer can find coasters in this area, the community pride remains. Be sure to meet some locals while you grab a coffee for the road or stay a while by sitting on couches with friends. The coffee beans on hand and for purchase are from local Virginia roaster, Prescription Coffee Lab.  On your way out, look for their brightly colored outdoor mural and flourishing veggie garden making for the perfect spot to have a cup of joe.

COVA Brewing Co.

9529 Shore Drive

COVA is nestled in the heart of East Ocean View, also known as East Beach, and is owned by two local families whose passions brought this project to life. COVA’s building was formerly an auto repair shop but has been beautifully transformed into a coastal influenced brew-house, offering both craft beers and coffee. Cedar slatted counters imitate beachy dune fencing, and the color schemes throughout reflect the palette and sheen of sea glass. While they’ve kept the classic garage door look, you would have never guessed the building’s previous life. Their slogan, “There’s always something brewing at COVA” refers to the frothy liquids that fill their fermenters as well as their tasty craft coffees. All syrups and flavorings are homemade and pair well with their locally sourced pastries and treats!

Mudita Cafe & Coffeehouse

9647 1st View St.

Mudita specializes in internationally inspired craft coffee and tea with rotating seasonal specialities. They also have a variety of breakfast and lunch options. Whether you’re in the mood for a unique coffee experience or just need a good brunch spot, Mudita Cafe & Coffeehouse is the place to be.

Railroad District

Coalescence Coffee

226 W 24th St.

Coalescence Coffee is paving the way for a newly imagined coffeehouse. While you might be thinking it’s their sleek, modern, well sought-after architectural design and Instagram-worthy drinks that sets them apart from many cafes, it’s actually their business model that has sparked our admiration. Coalescence is a not-for-profit coffeehouse that’s completely community driven—even their baristas double as community catalysts! You can find this one-of-a-kind coffee shop in the Railroad District, a neighborhood that is being revitalized thanks to companies like Coalescence. Before planting roots within the district, the owners chatted with local businesses and residents in this neighborhood to make sure they were wanted and needed, just another example of their community-minded model.

Mea Culpa

2410 Colonial Ave.

Most locals will suggest this café for their waffle sandwiches since the owner once ran a favorite foodie pop-up called Waffletina. However, in looking for a more permanent space, Mea Culpa was born and now has much more than decadent waffle sandwiches. Customers will find locally roasted Three Ships brewed coffee and espresso with house-made seasonal syrups that make their lattes extra special. You can also spend the day hanging out in their outdoor hammocks or on their 1906 Victorian front porch. The inside of the coffee house boasts modern, sleek vibes, which pairs well with the owners’ personable demeanors. Nosh on a waffle, sip on a coffee, sign-in to WIFI and let the relaxing day pass you by.

Multiple Locations

Town Center Cold Pressed

Downtown: 100 E. Main St. (Inside Norfolk Hilton The main)
Ghent: 1902 Colley Ave.

An extensive but insanely straightforward and delicious menu awaits you at Town Center Cold Pressed. You’ll find everything from Nitro Brown Sugar Vanilla Lattes and superfood lattes like pistachio to their freshly squeezed juices, oatmeal and açai bowls. Waffles and bagels are also on the menu for the days when you want something heartier.

Meet the Pitmaster of RedWood Smoke Shack, Bob Roberts

We all have hobbies that keep us well-rounded and shape us into who we are. What happens when those hobbies become a full-time business? Bob Roberts, pitmaster and owner of Redwood Smoke Shack, lives the experience firsthand as he operates a Texas-inspired barbecue joint in the heart of Ghent.

@redwoodsmoke, Instagram

Roberts’ journey began when he traded in the bitterly cold winters of Syracuse for Norfolk’s sunny, mild climate back in 2009. While serving as the contract catering manager at Norfolk State University (NSU), he began throwing backyard get-togethers during which he began teaching himself to smoke meat. Through YouTube tutorials and a lot of practice, he learned to smoke items like ribs and pork shoulder, then quickly graduated to smoking an entire hog for luau feasts. Some of his favorite memories are hosting NSU-themed luaus for students to celebrate their back-to-school arrival. He then decided to start selling his barbecue creations from his driveway. After that, he says, “Things snowballed.”

In 2016, Roberts purchased a red-doored trailer that he found on eBay to transform it into the Redwood Smoke Shack food truck. The red door from his newly purchased trailer reminded him of New York-based Redwood Diner, which gave rise to his establishment’s name. Two years later, Roberts found himself with such success and love from the Norfolk community that he opened up his now permanent space in Ghent.

Roberts says his decision for creating Texas-inspired barbecue was an easy one. He loves the challenging yet simplistic nature of this style of barbecue, focusing on the quality of meat paired with the craft of creating a flavorful dry rub. “I love the ‘cue-mmunity,” Roberts says.  “Everyone is so welcoming.”

He suggests enjoying Redwood’s spiced rubbed meat without any condiments because the Texas rub shines best when devoured on its own. However, for those diehard sauce fans, Redwood offers five separate house-made sauces ranging in different spice and sweetness levels to further enhance the experience.

Rooftop Dining in Norfolk

There’s something quite magical about a rooftop dining experience. There’s the unique chance to escape the city’s hustle and bustle while very much being in the midst of it all. There’s the exclusive feeling of rising to the same level as skyscrapers and seagulls. Most enjoyably, there’s the unprecedented views of glistening water, twinkling lights and a grand cityscape. Plan to elevate your experience at these Norfolk rooftop restaurants.

Grain

The bird’s eye view from Grain is accompanied with cozy couches, oversized selfie worthy chairs, fire pits to cheers around and over 80 beers on draft. Grain is located Downtown and is Norfolk’s only rooftop beer garden offering bountiful Sunday brunches, an abundance of live music performances and happy hour ever day! Cityscape views at Grain are available year-round. The warmer months invite you to throw on your tank top and head to the rooftop deck where life-sized lawn games await while the cooler months motivate you to layer up and sip a brew cuddled around the fire.

Leone’s

The inescapable truth is that city views are better when freshly stuffed cannolis are involved. Overlooking Norfolk’s famous Granby Street sits Leone’s, one of the most beloved Italian restaurants in the city. Sip a cocktail with an Italian twist before sharing a round of appetizers with friends or a superb pasta dish for a romantic evening out and up.

Ocean View Fishing Pier Restaurant

As much as we love our cityscape views, there’s nothing like dining on the Chesapeake Bay itself. The Ocean View Fishing Pier Restaurant sits high in the air offering views for miles. Adirondack high top seats invite you to sip a fruity cocktail, enjoy a bowl of she crab soup and relish in the fact you just saw a dolphin!

The Ghent

The Ghent is a self-pour gastropub and rooftop lounge. They use a state-of-the-art self-pour draft system that allows guests to decide how much of what beer, wine or batched cocktail they want to enjoy. Just get your pour card activated by a “beerista’ or manager and enjoy your favorite libation at your own pace. The Ghent serves high quality restaurant food in a welcoming atmosphere.  They’re solely a fast casual concept with no servers.

Meet the Owners of Luna Maya, Karla and Vivian Montano

Located in the heart of the historic Ghent neighborhood is a Bolivian and Central American-inspired restaurant, Luna Maya. The Montano sisters, Karla and Vivian, opened the restaurant in 1997 when there was limited international cuisine available in the area. Although the sisters did not have an abundance of experience in operating a restaurant prior to opening, their passion for food allowed them to succeed and become a Norfolk staple.

Growing up, the Montano sisters were raised in a Bolivian household where food was highly valued in their family. “We cooked and ate seasonally using only the best ingredients our mother could find,” Karla describes. At 10 years old, Vivian began to show more interest in different styles of cuisine and asked her mother to take a Chinese cooking class to learn about other cultures of food. It was this class that made Vivian’s passion come to life. From there she found herself taking over her mother’s kitchen for Sunday dinners. As Vivian became more confident in cooking, she urged Karla to lend a hand, and the sister cooking duo began.

Many of the restaurant’s dishes cannot be found anywhere else in the 757 because of the uniqueness of flavors. Karla’s favorite menu item is the tamales, which features fresh corn seasoned with cinnamon, a traditional Bolivian twist. The magic of this dish lies in the tender, juicy shredded brisket on top. As someone who disliked the way meat tends to dry inside a typical tamale, Karla decided on the brisket topping instead and found that it pairs beautifully with the starchiness of the corn.

Aside from the delicious food, the ambiance of Luna Maya is a vibrant and welcoming experience. The outside draws patrons in with its beautiful patio, shading umbrellas and twinkling lights while the inside’s brick walls and soft lighting beckons guests to stay a while. The sisters settled in Ghent because of its quaintness—and with the dream of having customers grow into regulars. After more than 25 years in business and a steady influx of both regulars and first-timers, it’s safe to say their dream has more than come true.

Our Favorite Unknown Things to See in Norfolk, VA Right Now

You may be familiar with some of Norfolk’s well-known attractions like Nauticus, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Virginia Zoo and the Norfolk Botanical Garden. But just off the beaten path, there’s some really cool, lesser-known gems just waiting to be discovered. These places and landmarks are part of what sets Norfolk apart from any other city. Here are a few of our favorite hidden gems to experience and share with others.

Cannonball at st. Paul’s Episcopal Church

Downtown you can discover St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, built in 1739. In addition to being the oldest building in Norfolk, having survived wars and fires, the church is a point of interest because of the cannonball lodged in the side of the building. This cannonball dates back to the Revolutionary War (more specifically New Year’s day of 1776) when Lord Dunmore was fleeing Norfolk (due to defeat) and fled to his ship just offshore. From his ship, he fired this cannonball, which can still be seen today.

Cementiscope at the Plot

Jennifer Collins Photography for VisitNorfolk

What could you do with a cement mixer … aside from mixing cement? If you’re the creative type, you might turn it into a kaleidoscope. That’s exactly what a group of artists (named Classitorium) came up with when working at the Chrysler Museum of Art with a goal to design a piece to honor new construction happening in the NEON (New Energy of Norfolk) District. The kaleidoscope weighs 3,000 pounds and features a hand-turned crank and LED lights. In short, yep, it really works, and yep, it’s really cool.

Fort Norfolk

Fort Norfolk is the last remaining of 19 harbor-front forts authorized in 1794 by President George Washington. The fort’s four-acre site, located in Ghent, overlooks the Elizabeth River and includes earthwork embankments, ramparts, a dungeon, officers’ quarters, powder magazine, barracks and guardhouse. Most structures in the fort date to 1810. Admission is free, and self-guided tours are available during the week.

Fred Heutte Center

@pawelsanspychala, Instagram

This might be Norfolk’s best-kept secret! The Fred Heutte Center is a nonprofit horticultural center housed in a restored 1887 ferry terminal. The terminal served Norfolk and Portsmouth ferry riders up until 1952 and then was deconstructed to be relocated to 1000 Botetourt Gardens, the heart of Norfolk’s Ghent neighborhood. The area incorporates four different gardens: a perennial garden, the herb knot garden, the heirloom vegetable garden, and a water garden.

McClure Field

Did you know Norfolk is home to the second oldest brick baseball stadium in the United States? McClure Field was constructed in 1918 and was host to several major league baseball stars such as Bob Feller, Pee Wee Reese, Dom DiMaggio and Phil Rizzuto who were playing on the field as members of one of the base’s two teams: the Naval Training Station Bluejackets and the Naval Air Station Airmen. In 1943, the two teams were pitted against one another in a best-of-seven series. However, when it came time for the big playoff, the threat of offshore German U-boats put the base on lockdown, and the only people who got to see the intense, 11-day series game were sailors themselves.

Mermaids of Norfolk

Though not technically hidden, all of Norfolk’s mermaids can be pretty difficult to spot unless you’re actively searching for them—which we highly recommend you do. Stop by our Visitor Center at 232 E. Main Street to pick up a Norfolk Mermaid map that will direct you the locations of each of these iconic and unique mermaids. Need some hints? Here’s a few to get you started.

Mile Marker Zero

Have you seen mile marker zero behind the Nauticus campus? This once concrete grey dock became a canvas for local artist Rick Nickel. Beautifully painted on the spacious dock is a 3,000-square-foot mural, The Magenta Line, whose name derives from a navigational guide on the Intracoastal Waterway nautical charts. With hand-painted benches lining the dock, it makes for the perfect picnic spot. Contact Nauticus for Pier operating hours.

Norfolk Boat Club

Instagram, @explorewithbrandy

Norfolk has historical sights and homes dating back to the 1800s that are scattered throughout the city. Take a stroll through Freemason District and take notice of all the fascinating facades. At the end of West Freemason Street is Norfolk Boat Club, a Norfolk landmark since 1893! Not only is the Boat Club a staple landmark to Norfolk’s history, but it also makes for an ideal place to watch the sun set.

Norfolk’s Cemeteries

If you’ve never experienced a cemetery tour, Norfolk is a good city in which to start. The historic cemeteries, many filled with beautiful Victorian funerary art, provide a glimpse into the past and insight into some of the notable people who shaped Norfolk into what it is today. During an exploration, you can learn about Norfolk’s 1855 yellow fever epidemic, view the expansive statues and mausoleum at Elmwood and pay respects to the place of burial for Black Union veterans. Learn about Norfolk’s eight historic municipal cemeteries here.

Plum Point Park

Located on the banks of the Elizabeth River directly off the path of the Elizabeth River Trail, Plum Point Park is an ideal place to go for running/jogging, picnics, boat watching, meditating or just having a plum good time. One of the cool highlights about Plum Point is the Double Turbo Challenges Course featuring a circuit of fun and challenging elements to improve agility, muscle tone and strength. A TerraSafe surface system underneath is designed to safely cushion falls or stumbles.

Quarantine Road

Constructed in 1783, Quarantine Road is one of the oldest roads in Norfolk to still exist. The purpose of the road was to minimize the spread of infectious diseases such as yellow fever from passengers and merchants. Take a stroll or bike down the throughway (crushed seashells line the way) to locate the historic maker that resides near Old Dominion University.

Weyanoke Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary

@gohrt_com, Twitter

Located at 1509 Armistead Bridge Road, the Weyanoke Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary provides the perfect opportunity to get lost in nature for a bit. Explore seven acres of unspoiled land where you’ll come across more than 150 species of flowers, shrubs and trees, plus unlimited opportunities for some of the best bird watching in the city. The name Weyanoke, you ask? Although allusions to Virginia’s Weyanoke tribe are found in several places in Norfolk, there’s no connection from the tribe to the sanctuary itself.

Your Complete Norfolk, VA Spring Bucket List

Spring in Norfolk is a downright magical time. Trees throughout the city are showing off with their beautiful pink and white blossoms. Farmers markets are back with a full bounty of spring produce and homemade goodies. Outdoor recreation is in full swing with bikers, joggers and kayakers taking advantage of ideal temperatures. Plus, festival season is back and ready to entertain with a whole lineup of reasons to gather and celebrate. We’ve put together a spring bucket list to ensure you’re getting the most out of your time in Norfolk during this most wonderful season.

1. Pack a Picnic

@vacheeseco, Instagram

Norfolk is surrounded by water on three sides, which makes for many parks with waterfront views. Stop by Virginia Cheese Co. to pick up an assortment of fine cheeses and accoutrements, or grab sandwiches from Pendulum Fine Meats’ Luncheonette. Then make your way to a relaxing picnic overlooking the Hague near Chrysler Museum of Art or at Norfolk’s Plum Point Park along the Elizabeth River Trail to watch the sailboats glide by. Or for a downtown picnic, pick up a colorful throw from Pure Lagos and a Stockpot Toastie of the day and stroll across the street to Town Point Park for a picnic on the Elizabeth River.

2. Attend the Norfolk Tides Home Opener Game

@rinaparrillagarcia, Instagram

Break out your baseball caps; it’s time to head to Harbor Park Stadium to cheer on the Norfolk Tides! The 2023 opener game is scheduled for April 4, but any of their games are a home run. Get ready for an ice cold beer, hot dogs (or veggie dogs) with all the toppings and a chance to meet Rip Tide and friends as you root, root, root for the home team.

3. Walk Among Cherry Blossoms

@throughshayslens, Instagram

While we may not be a top destination for cherry blossoms, Norfolk is still a cherry blossom dream once everything starts to bloom. Most of these beautiful trees can be found near Downtown or Freemason District, but Norfolk Botanical Garden has several throughout their lush landscape as well. Take shade underneath them, have a photoshoot or just awe in their vibrant pink flowers—and don’t forget to tag us @visitnorfolkva in your photos.

4. Watch a Sunrise at the Beach

@quintthepup, Instagram

The sun rises in the east, and we are lucky to look out over East Beach and Ocean View to see the sun coming up brightly and beautifully over the Chesapeake Bay horizon. Grab a coffee to-go from COVA Brewing Co. and make your way to either location for a gorgeous sunrise over the water. Bring the pup! Dogs are allowed on both beaches until 10 a.m.

5. Gather Fresh Produce at a Farmers Market

There’s nothing better than scoring locally grown fruits and veggies that were picked just hours earlier. Peruse our farmers markets in Norfolk and find some fun souvenirs like handmade soap and local honey, along with sun-soaked produce. In the springtime, look for locally grown spinach, asparagus, green onions, peas and strawberries.

6. Explore a Themed Garden

@norfolkbotanicalgarden, Instagram. Image by Peter Squicciarini.

The beautiful Norfolk Botanical Garden has over 60 themed gardens on the property, and there is always something to explore. Spring is a prime opportunity to behold some blooms. Daffodils begin in late February, mingling with lovely camellias in all hues. In April, azaleas take over in the most wonderful way, followed by a rainbow of tulips. Around May, the rose garden is an absolute dream for the eyes and the olfactory system.

7. Enjoy a Rainy Day

That’s right, enjoy your time, even if the weather isn’t ideal. With spring comes showers (it’s how we get those May flowers, after all), but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun! Explore our abundance of museums, including the Chrysler Museum of Art, Barry Art Museum, d’Art Center, NauticusHermitage Museum & GardensMacArthur Memorial and the Hunter House Victorian Museum. Be sure to splash in a rain puddle on your way in! For more museums, click here.

8. Find a Piece of Art

@theninarussell, Instagram

Giant sculptures, iron statues and a life-sized kaleidoscope are pieces scattered throughout our city for your enjoyment, particularly in the NEON District. While there are more than 50 pieces of public art (and counting), we’ve rounded up some must-see pieces for you.

9. Go for a Bike Ride

One of our favorite springtime excursions is hopping on our bicycles for a picturesque ride along Norfolk’s Elizabeth River Trail. This 10.5-mile-pathway takes you through some of Norfolk’s coolest neighborhoods, with plenty of spots along the way to take a break for a brew or a view. Need to rent bikes? Check out Pedego for an electric bike experience you’ll love.

10. Dine on the Patio

@leonesnorfolk, Instagram

There’s arguably no better time than spring to enjoy a meal outdoors. Luckily, Norfolk has some great options for patio dining. Check out Longboards for a surf shack vibe and marina views, or grab a bite of Italian food on a rooftop patio with garden lights at Leone’sCheck out more patio dining here.

11. Walk Among Animals at the Zoo

The Virginia Zoo is located in the heart of the city. Stroll the 53 acres of lush gardens and visit its 700 furry, feathered and scaly animal friends. Witness the animals in their respective habitats; giraffes outstretching for leaves, monkeys swinging from branch to branch and Magpies singing songs.

12. Attend a spring festival

Courtesy of Norfolk Festevents, Ltd.

Festival season in Norfolk springs into action starting with the Virginia International Tattoo in April. This annual event showcases inspirational military music, majestic massed pipes and drums, show-stopping drill team maneuvers and hundreds of international performers! Next up is the Spring Town Point Virginia Wine Festival, along with the Stockley Gardens Spring Arts Festival (held during the same weekend in early May). The Bayou Bon Vivant Cajun Music & Food Festival brings a taste of Louisiana to Norfolk while the Patriotic Festival celebrates the branches of our armed forces.
