Ways to Make Summer Last in Norfolk

It happens every year. One minute, you’re stretched out on an Ocean View beach reapplying sunscreen, and the next, “Back to School” ads are intrusively popping up on your devices. “How can summer be over already?” you wonder. “We just started having fun!” Not to fear, our summer-lovin’ friends. Norfolk’s balmy weather, endless outdoor activities and fabulous festivals allow you to experience a longer summer season. While visitors in other regions are breaking out the boots and overindulging in pumpkin-spiced everything, here in Norfolk, we’re still hopping on boats, booking tickets to outdoor performances and enjoying freshly caught seafood plus local brews from the finest waterfront patios. Join us, won’t you? Here are some ways to make summer last longer in Norfolk.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Beach Days

Let’s start with the obvious. Summer is meant to be enjoyed on the sand, waves lapping at our toes. Beach days don’t have to cease just because August is ending. In fact, post-Labor Day outings in Ocean View and East Beach mean less crowds and more space to spread out with a blanket (or a luxury picnic). And, if you’re traveling with your four-legged pooch, you can bring your trusty companion along for sand and surf following the Labor Day holiday. Whether you spend the day lounging, fishing, kayaking or stand up paddleboarding, be sure to get in at least one more beach day at Ocean View.

Water Activities

If you’re more on the active side, take advantage of Norfolk’s 144 miles of shoreline with a water excursion. How about paddling on the Lafayette River to get in touch with Norfolk’s beautiful nature. The season isn’t over yet, and now’s the perfect time since scorching hot days have ended. Or, maybe you’d rather sit back and relax on a cruise to learn more about the region or experience an end-of-summer dinner cruise. Fishing will surely keep you in the spirit of summer, and we’ve got just the place to reel ’em in, then enjoy a frosty beverage and appetizer on site. Here are some more water activities to soak in the final days of summer.

Tides Games

Did you know the Norfolk Tides play through mid-September? There’s still time to root, root, root for the home team while enjoying all the popcorn you want—plus hot dogs, tacos, pizza and beer. Harbor Park’s theme nights make the experience all the more fun whether you’re visiting for baseball card giveaways, Bark in the Park or a business special matinee. Plus, certain nights offer final chances to see the magic of fireworks this summer. Cheer on a home run, try to catch a foul ball, and watch bright colors light up the Norfolk sky. You’ll think it’s the start of summer all over again. See the Tides season schedule.

Explore Plants, Animals and Art

These are the ideal days for visiting one of Norfolk’s fascinating attractions. It’s warm but not too hot, social but not too crowded, and there’s never-ending possibilities of things to see and do. Head to Norfolk Botanical Garden and bask in the blooms of camellias, autumn flowering cherries and Japanese toad lilies. You can even enjoy a picnic in the Garden among the beautiful blooms. Visit over 700 species at the Virginia Zoo. Now is a great time since animals tend to be more active once temperatures start to dip. For a hybrid indoor/outdoor excursion, the Hermitage Museums and Gardens features over 5,000 objects and ever-changing exhibitions, plus lush, waterfront grounds and gardens to wander.

Do and See on the ERT

Norfolk’s Elizabeth River Trail is a 10.5-mile walkable and bikeable path that winds through beautiful neighborhoods and treats wanderers to stunning waterfront views. Now that it’s not hot enough to melt bicycle tires and shoe soles into a puddle, spend a morning or afternoon exploring your favorite parts of Norfolk. Journey past Harbor Park, the Battleship Wisconsin, through the cobblestone streets of Freemason and along the waterfront walkway at The Hague. Stop for a drink and a bite in Chelsea before scoping out the serene nature of Lamberts Point. Here’s some additional ideas for things to do along the Elizabeth River Trail.

Summer Eats + Drinks

Seafood

Nothing quite says summer in Norfolk more than relaxing on an outdoor patio with a plate of crab cakes, shrimp or fresh catch of the day. With our close proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, there’s always an abundance of seafood to enjoy steamed, grilled, raw or fried. Our restaurants run the gamut of dishes and atmospheres. You could be indulging in a soft shell crab sandwich, fries and ice cold beer while overlooking the water for lunch, then savoring delicate diver scallops on white tablecloths for dinner. Here’s a roundup of Norfolk’s seafood spots.

Oysters

Yes, we know oysters are seafood. Trust us when we deem them worthy of their own category. The commonwealth is home to eight oyster regions, with flavors ranging from briny to mild to sweet butter and cream. Norfolk restaurants take great pride in serving oysters that are both local and from waters afar, so there’s always an opportunity to discover a new favorite. We suggest ordering them raw with a side of cocktail sauce, lemon juice or mignonette. You’ll also find them steamed, fried or served Rockefeller or Romano style. Whatever you’re craving, these Norfolk oyster bars are ideal for shucking and slurping.

Barbecue

There’s technically no wrong time of year to enjoy barbecue, but savoring it in the summer is reminiscent of backyard gatherings, family reunions and that irresistible, smoky char filling the air and making mouths water. There’s something quite satisfying about biting into a sandwich piled high with warm brisket or pulled pork, dripping with tangy sauce and cooled down with a dollop of house-made coleslaw. Plus, when football season rolls around, you know those cravings are simply going to intensify. So, put in the legwork now by trying these top barbecue joints in Norfolk

Ice Cream and Gelato

It would be a real shame to end summer—or any summer meal, for that matter—without a scoop of velvety ice cream or gelato. Indeed, there’s no better way to cool down and satisfy a sweet tooth at the same time than with a sundae, cone or shake. When it comes to options, Norfolk has quite the cream of the crop. There’s s’mores ice cream, nitrogen-whipped treats, rolled ice cream, plus creamy and fruity gelatos. For a little factual cherry on top, Norfolk is home to the original waffle cone, and you can order one created from the very same machine rolled out in 1904. Cool down at these hot spots.

Breweries

Breweries are a year-round staple in Norfolk (why else would they have seasonal beers?), but the end of summer and early fall are exciting times to visit these locally loved establishments. Want to bask in the warmth of endless summer days and firefly-dotted evenings? Choose a refreshing light summer ale. Want to pretend the leaves are starting to change? Many breweries will already have their autumn options ready to pour, so go ahead and try that Oktoberfest or pumpkin ale you’ve been eyeing. Here’s a list of Norfolk breweries to get you started.

Norfolk Restaurants with Great Hard Cider Selections

One of our favorite things about autumn is the amazing lineup of fall flavors at Norfolk’s breweries. There’s the Pumpkin Spiced Latte Ale at COVA Brewing Co., Outta Yer Gourd pumpkin ale from Smartmouth Brewing Co. just to name a few. Every now and then, however, we like to break away from the popular pumpkin sips and get a little fruitier with autumn’s prized jewel: the apple. While Norfolk isn’t home to any true cideries, we do have a good number of restaurants that carry great selections of hard ciders, including many from Virginia. Sips may change with the season, but overall, here are the best Norfolk restaurants to find hard ciders.

The Birch

@thebirchbar, Instagram

Situated in Norfolk’s Chelsea Neighborhood, The Birch has been long praised for its fantastic, often hard-to-find selections of craft beer. One thing you may not know is that this delightful beer bar features five carefully selected, rotating ciders (and often meads) on tap. There’s currently Aragon 1904, an 8.6% ABV traditional cider, along with a 6% ABV Basque Cider from Spain. Other options include Valley Roots dry cider blend, Pollination Blossom Honey Cider and a red sangria on tap for something a little different.

COVA Brewing Co.

If breweries were placed in a sandbox, COVA would surely win a gold star for playing well with others. In addition to brewing their own delicious beer, COVA features guest taps to celebrate the fruits of other brewers’ labor. They generally strive to have at least one cider on tap, with Blue Toad’s Blue Raspberry Granny Light being a recent crisp and easily drinkable option.

Grain

Courtesy of Ali Zaman, VTC

Quite possibly one of the most excidering things to hit a drink menu is Grain’s cider flight! For just $13, you can taste four ciders including options from Austin Eastciders, McKenzie’s, Downeast and the ever-popular Bold Rock. Already know what you like? Order a full size of your favorite cider in a glass or even a growler.

Hank’s Filling Station

Known for their delicious barbecue, backyard games and rotating selection of taps, Hank’s is an ideal place to kick back with a beverage on a crisp fall day, especially when cozying up to their irresistible firepits. On tap, look for Back Bay Farmhouse Brewing Company’s 6.7% ABV Apple Blossom Cider and Bold Rock’s 4.7% ABV Berry Peach, both available as 16-ounce pours. Don’t forget to peek past the digital board of taps because you’ll get a great glimpse of canned hard ciders inside the refrigerated glass case, just waiting to be purchased, poured and enjoyed.

The Veil

Norfolk’s only brewery that creates its own cider, The Veil offers Stay, an enjoyable cider conditioned in oak foudres for 12 weeks. Full of flavor, this one drinks like a cider but packs a punch at 8% ABV, so sip slowly and leisurely.

Other Options

Ciders aren’t necessarily a guarantee at these restaurants, but we’ve been known to have some luck finding Blue Toad Hard Cider (Roseland, Va.) at Elation Brewing, Potter’s Craft Cider (Charlottesville, Va.) at Alkaline and Potter’s beloved Farmhouse Dry at Crudo Nudo (temporarily closed for repairs as of Aug. 2025).

Norfolk College Guide for Students

Welcome to your college experience in Norfolk, VA! Whether you’re enrolled at Old Dominion University, Tidewater Community College or Norfolk State University—and regardless if you’re a first year student, transfer student or living local and commuting to campus, we’re glad you’re here. Norfolk is a melting pot of people, places and ideas, and it’s an ideal spot to call home during your time at college and perhaps after!

Centrally located along the mid-Atlantic coast, with easy access from Norfolk International Airport, AMTRAK train station and two interstate highways, Norfolk is as easy to get to as it is to get around! Our summers are balmy, and our winters are mild, lending to an enjoyable atmosphere during all four seasons. The culture in Norfolk is diverse, vibrant and ever-changing, allowing the movers, shakers and future leaders (that’s you) to be part of a welcoming community and make it your own. At VisitNorfolk, we’re here to help you chart your course and explore as much of Norfolk as possible—on your campus and beyond—to truly experience the city that will help shape your memories and always welcome you back.

Transportation/Getting Around

There’s much to see and do, so plan on wandering out of the dorm and into some fun. Start by getting acquainted with Norfolk’s neighborhoods, each unique and worth checking out by foot or via bike or scooter. No car? No problem. Here are some options for getting around.

University Shuttles

By now, you may already know that your university offers a free shuttle service for students. At ODU, Monarch Transit provides fixed-route bus service to all academic areas, residence halls, parking locations and athletic fields—plus on the weekends, they offer stops to destinations including Ghent. NSU’s shuttle service travels from the East Campus to the West Campus and even offers free shuttle service for students attending classes on both NSU and ODU campuses. In addition, there’s a weekend shuttle service transporting students to commercial destinations.

Ride the Tide

Norfolk’s very own light rail operates right by NSU at Harbor Park, taking travelers to destinations like Ghent, the Chrysler Museum of Art and the MacArthur Memorial. The light rail operates daily. Students at TCC, NSU and ODU are encouraged to purchase an HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) GoPass365 so that you can ride any HRT light rail, bus or even ferry as many times as you want within the period of the pass and hours of operation.

Bus Passes

HRT’s buses will take passengers just about anywhere they want or need to go, with multiple convenient stops along the way. Remember: a GoPass365 is valid for all of HRT’s transportation options, including the bus. HRT also offers Paratransit service for persons who, because of a disability, cannot utilize a fixed bus route service. Passengers who need to utilize the Paratransit service must fill out an application; once certified, riders can use the service for any purpose within the service area.

Bikes and Scooters

If you brought your bike from home, you’ll be happy to know that Norfolk has nearly 60 miles of dedicated bike lanes and shared lane markings, giving you plenty of safe streets to pedal from Point A to B. If you didn’t bring a bike or want to go a tad faster, you can rent an electric bike from E-Bike Alley, located Downtown. Another great option is Lime E-Scooters and E-Bikes. Lime deploys up to 1,100 scooters and 500 e-bikes across the city. You can rent both through the Lime app, which will help you find vehicles near you and unlock them. Pricing for scooters and bikes is $3 per ride for the first six minutes, then $0.32 per minute after. We know you’re independent and ready to make your own choices as college students, but just a quick reminder from mom: don’t forget a helmet!

Restaurants Near Campus

ODU

Students can find a plethora of dining options, most within walking distance on Monarch Way or in nearby Larchmont. Whether you’re looking for much-needed caffeine as you’re cramming for exams, a laid-back atmosphere to watch the game with friends or a new favorite weekend hangout spot, here are some of the best restaurants near ODU

NSU

Hop on The Tide light rail for a quick ride Downtown. You’ll be immersed in a foodie paradise, all within walking distance. Spend some time browsing Selden Market, filled with locally-owned shops, plus dining options like Stockpot (healthy comfort food) and S’Mores Amore (homemade marshmallows toasted on the spot). Play some games during dinner at Circuit Social.

TCC

Tidewater Community College is situated in the heart of downtown Norfolk, affording students access to many restaurants within easy walking distance. Among the more popular eateries for students include Famous Uncle Al’s Hotdogs and Fries, Pokey, Major Phillie’s Cheesesteaks, Hokkaido and many, many more.

Free Activities

Living on a college budget isn’t the easiest, but here in Norfolk, that won’t stop you from living it up. Norfolk has many free activities to enjoy between classes and on the weekends. During the warmer months, head to Ocean View and East Beach for a day of relaxing. Enjoy a self-guided tour of Norfolk’s mural art in the NEON District. On cold or rainy days, spend an afternoon wandering through the Hermitage, d’Art Center and Chrysler Museum plus nearby Perry Glass Studio, which offers free glassblowing demonstrations at noon Wednesday through Sunday. All of these are free Norfolk museums worth getting to know. Finally, there’s a reason we’re called Mermaid City. Norfolk’s iconic mermaids, each with their own personality, can be found throughout the city. Go on a mermaid scavenger hunt to see how many you can find. In addition to these, many Norfolk attractions offer student discounts, so research before going, and bring your student ID along.

Quiet Places to Study

When you’re cramming for a big exam or writing an important paper and your roommates are, well … not on the same page, you’ll want a quiet place to get the work done. Try one of Norfolk’s public libraries, including Slover, featuring computers and internet access, interactive displays, a design studio and a video production studio. If you need a pick-me-up, cozy up at one of these Norfolk coffee shops and buzz through your work with an extra shot of espresso. If you’re an outdoorsy type, head to one of Norfolk’s parks like TowneBank Fountain Park, Town Point Park or the Pagoda & Oriental Garden.

Ways to Stay Active

College is about learning lots, making friends and having fun, but it’s also important to stay active. Physical activity is directly linked to mental and emotional wellness, all important aspects of your health to maintain during college and beyond. Spend some time walking or biking along the 10.5-mile Elizabeth River Trail, and get to know Norfolk better in the process. Climb to new heights at the city’s own rock-climbing gym, Latitude Climbing + Fitness. Explore our waterways by renting a kayak and paddling along the Lafayette River. Finally, check our events calendar for pop-up yoga happenings. Bonus: Some experiences involve baby goats!

Best Ice Cream and Gelato Shops in Norfolk

There’s no better way to cool down in the hot summer months (or indulge any time of year) than by visiting some ice cream shops. You may already know that the original waffle cone was created right here in Norfolk, but did you also know you can delight in, Thai rolled ice cream and ethereal selections of gelato all within our city? Here are some of the hottest places for the coolest treats in Norfolk.

Blyss Ice Cream and Desserts

BLYSS owner Bria Suggs

Located at 112 Granby St. in the heart of Downtown Norfolk, Blyss serves ice cream cups, cones, sundaes and milkshakes with the following flavors: cookies and cream, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, strawberry cheesecake, pistachio, cotton candy and vegan cookie.

Doumar’s

Every day is ice cream day at Doumar’s where they crank out creamy shakes and ice cream sundaes in their nostalgic diner that’s been operating for more than a century. They’re most known for their handmade waffle cones, rolled right in front of your eyes on the original machine built in 1904, but you also can’t go wrong with their shortcakes, splits, sundaes and shakes, most of which come with whipped cream and a classic cherry on top.

Lolly’s Creamery

@mother1auren, Instagram

Taste the joy in every scoop of Lolly’s ice cream. Originally churned in Virginia Beach, Lolly’s made their way to Norfolk, bringing with them a creamy craving we can’t deny. The Lolly’s brand encompasses three things: joy, community and generosity. Try their classic flavors like strawberry, real deal vanilla and mint chocolate chip, and also be on the lookout for their monthly rotating flavors and weekly releases.

On Ice

@on_ice2, Instagram

If you thought all ice cream was created equally, think again. At On Ice, located near Naval Station Norfolk, the made-from-scratch batches are created in a unique, nitrogen-based method, transforming a simple ice cream shop visit into a fascinating show and learning experience. Choose from sundae flavors like Chocolate Explosion or Strawberry Cream Pie, or make your own by combining ice cream flavors with fun toppings. Enjoy them traditionally, or opt for the N₂.I.C.E.D. version in which ingredients are whipped into a sphere and flash frozen for an airy, crunchy texture.

S’Mores Amore

S’mores have been a Downtown staple ever since Owner Duane Dinio first invited customers to “get fired up” at his Selden Market shop. Picture a perfect square of graham cracker crust, layered with a brownie or blondie and topped with a marshmallow toasted to perfection right before your eyes. If that wasn’t heavenly enough, S’mores Amore added an ice cream menu that melds handmade ice cream with chunks of S’mores Amore brownie or blondie pieces for a cool way to enjoy the ultimate s’mores experience.

Strawberry Fields

If strawberry fields are forever, that’s how long we’ll be obsessed with this gem of a gelato shop in Norfolk’s Ghent neighborhood. Each day, their gelato is made from scratch with new flavors consistently posted on their social media. From ooey gooey cake to brown butter pecan, there’s surely a flavor to suit your fancy. Check out this City with Bite episode on Strawberry Fields to learn more

Urban Ice

You’ve had ice cream in a bowl, cone, blender, cake and sandwich, but have you had it rolled? Thai rolled ice cream is created by pouring liquid ice cream ingredients onto a below-freezing surface, spreading it out, cutting into strips, rolling them up and topping with all sorts of sweet creations. At Urban Ice, you can create your own combination or go with a favorite like Cookie Monster or Mango Tango.

An established menu favorite is the wild boar ragu over housemade tagliatelle, topped with rosemary infused olive oil.

Get in the spirit of the season as you experience millions of lights in three Virginia cities: Richmond, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Spend a festival holiday week driving or walking through light shows that will dazzle and shine.

Visit Agecroft Hall, a country manor house set amid gardens along the river. Built in England in the 15th century and transported here in 1925, the Hall is lovingly decorated for the season. Then tour the Virginia House, a 12th century priory reconstructed as an English manor house. Indulge in a fabulous afternoon tea time at the 5-star Jefferson Hotel. This historic hotel has catered to no less than 11 presidents, British royalty and countless celebrities. Have a group photo with the magnificent Christmas tree or on the famous staircase that was featured in the movie “Gone With The Wind.”

Discover Richmond’s origin story in the city’s oldest neighborhood and a true food and history powerhouse with Discover Richmond Food Tours. Then hear the inspired words of Patrick Henry, “Give me liberty or give me death” at  St. John’s Church. At this very location on March 23, 1775, in the presence of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and the other members of the Second Virginia Convention, the torch of liberty was kindled and these words were inspired.Experience dinner at the famous restaurant The Tobacco Company Restaurant, located in the heart of historic Shockoe Slip among the cobblestones in Richmond’s oldest part of the city. This former tobacco warehouse exudes ambiance and beauty unlike any other dining establishment in Richmond. Then it’s off to the “Tacky Lights Tour” through many of Richmond’s local neighborhoods with each house decorated with a minimum of 10,000 lights.

DAY THREE—NORFOLK, VA

Now is the time to celebrate the holidays in Coastal Virginia, just a 1.5-hour drive from Richmond. Two of Norfolk’s historic houses are decorated for the holidays. The Hunter House Victorian Museum, rich in architectural detail, displays the Hunter family’s collection of furnishings and decorative pieces done up for a Victorian Christmas. The Myers House, an elegant Federal period home dating back to 1792, was built by one of Norfolk’s first Jewish residents and is decorated for Hanukkah.

Savor dinner at the historic Omar’s Carriage House, whose original patrons were horses. Experience the magic of Norfolk’s Garden of Lights from the comfort of a tram or walking through the 2.5 miles of twinkling light displays at the Norfolk Botanical Garden Monday through Thursday.
