Best Ways to Stay Fit at your Norfolk Convention

Perhaps you’re regularly fitness minded and don’t want to skip a beat in your workout routine. Maybe you’re simply looking to move your legs after long days of sitting, listening and brainstorming. Whatever the reason to get moving, Norfolk has the spaces and the views to boost your motivation. Here are some of the best ways to stay fit at your Norfolk meeting or convention.

Yoga Pop Ups

@covabrewco, Instagram

Maybe one of the most exciting ways to zen out during a conference is yoga. While yoga studios in Norfolk are aesthetically pleasing, yoga outside overlooking the water, on the beach or even with goats make for a unique and exciting way to move your body—something you can’t experience at home! Check out our events calendar for the latest yoga happenings. Locations and experiences vary throughout the year.

Elizabeth River Trail

The Elizabeth River Trail, also known as the ERT, is Norfolk’s 10.5-mile-long walk and bikeable pathway that takes you through multiple neighborhoods with different waterfront views. Starting out in our thriving Downtown, the trail winds you through a few historic neighborhoods and campuses and ends in the beautiful neighborhood of Lochhaven. The ERT is trickled with breweries and delicious restaurants along the way, and if you are not familiar with our city, it’s a great lookbook to a day in the life of a Norfolkian. You can experience the ERT by bike, scooter or your own two feet. With Lime scooters scattered throughout the city, you can easily hop on and off the trail from just about any location. Renting bicycles at Pedego, located in Downtown Norfolk is also an option to explore and get your exercise in.

Another great option for exercise along the ERT is the Plum Point Park obstacle course. The course is a full body workout; you’ll climb over walls, swing across monkey bars and jump over obstacles to really get those glutes working!

Explore the Battleship Wisconsin

Working out is ideal during business trips, but some days we’re grateful just to get our steps in. With a visit to the Battleship Wisconsin, not only will you be touring an iconic Norfolk attraction, but your Fitbit reporting will be impressed with your elevations and amount of steps you log touring the vessel. Take on the ladderwells of seven decks’ worth of history and views on this 887-foot ship.

Rock Climbing

Head to Latitude Climbing + Fitness where you can rock climb, meditate through yoga classes and get your sweat on at a HIIT class in a fully equipped Rogue gym. We recommend purchasing a day pass while in Norfolk to get unlimited access to rock-climbing, bouldering and yoga classes.

Kayaking

Anyone up for an upper body sunset workout to end a long day of meetings? Sightsee along the Lafayette River with Norfolk Kayak Rentals. Being outside on one of Norfolk’s many waterways is a preferred method of exercise in this city.

Hotel Gyms

While hotel gyms may seem like the obvious choice of exercise, the experience can sometimes be less than thrilling. We suggest mixing it up! Glass Light Hotel & Gallery has a state-of-the-art gym that overlooks our iconic historic Granby Street and the Downtown Norfolk skyline. Or, you can enjoy a casual swim before a day full of presentations at Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.

What to Do Along the Elizabeth River Trail

The Elizabeth River Trail, also known as the ERT, is Norfolk’s 10.5-mile-long walkable and bikeable pathway that takes you through multiple neighborhoods with different waterfront views. Starting out at Norfolk State University, the trail winds you through historic neighborhoods and ends in the beautiful neighborhood of Lochhaven. The ERT is trickled with breweries and delicious restaurants along the way, and if you are not familiar with our city, it’s a great way to explore like a local.

You can experience the ERT by bike, scooter or your own two feet. With Lime scooters scattered throughout the city, you can easily hop on and off the trail from just about any location. Renting bicycles at E-Bike Alley, located in Downtown Norfolk is also an option to explore.

To help guide you along the ERT, we have put together information on what to expect and where to stop within each section.

Happy trailing, and don’t forget to tag us (@visitnorfolkva with the hashtag #visitnorfolkva) in your Elizabeth River Trail photos for a chance to be featured below!

Norfolk State University – 0.38 Miles

The Elizabeth River Trail’s east entrance starts at Norfolk State University, a Historically Black College/University that was founded in 1935. NSU hosts football games (#GoSpartans), Black History Month programs and activities and an annual MLK Observance including a march and often a featured speaker.

Harbor Park – 0.89 miles

This stretch of path showcases Harbor Park, home of Norfolk’s minor league baseball team, the Tides. While you’re here, don’t forget to have your picture taken with the Norfolk Tides official mermaid out front!

Downtown Waterfront – 1.14 miles

Once you have passed Harbor Park, you will see beautiful views of the Elizabeth River on the edges of Downtown. This portion of the ERT will lead you behind the Waterside District and through Town Point Park until you get to Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin. The Waterside District makes for the perfect stop to grab a bite to eat. Indulge in sweet treats at Carolina Cupcakery before you set off on the rest of your excursion.

Freemason – 0.73 miles

With the Battleship Wisconsin now behind you, you will find that the trail is lined with picturesque cobblestone streets, homes from the 1800s, including the Hunter House Victorian Museum, and boutique cafes, like Cure Coffeehouse. A hidden gem in this neighborhood is the Pagoda & Oriental Garden. You know you’re exiting this section of the trail once you pass Four Eleven York Restaurant & Inn toward Brambleton Avenue.

The Hague – 1.48 miles

Once you go under and over a bridge, you will have overlooks of The Hague with European vibes along the ERT. At the end of The Hague, you’ll spot the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Glass Studio. If you are there around noon Tuesday through Saturday, be sure to watch their free daily glass blowing demonstration. As you continue along, you will pass private homes ranging in styles from Queen Anne to Shingle styles and Colonial Revivals in Ghent continuing to Redgate Avenue toward Chelsea and West Ghent.

Fort Norfolk/Plum Point Park – 0.92 miles

Hop off the trail and head to Fort Norfolk, the last remaining of 19 harbor-front forts authorized in 1794 by President George Washington. Quick tip: you will need an ID to enter the fort. Located on five acres of land, Plum Point Park is a site for environmental restoration with magnificent views of the river.

Chelsea – 0.33 miles

This portion of the trail is worth a couple hours of your time. Some of Norfolk’s most beloved restaurants and breweries are located all within the Chelsea District and within walking distance from one another. Hop off your bike or scooter and head to Benchtop Brewing, the Birch BarTorch Bistro or a local’s favorite, Orapax, a Greek restaurant. If you want to experience more than one place at a time, we recommend ordering a brick oven pizza from Chelsea Bakehouse and enjoying it next door at The Birch

West Ghent – 1.42 miles

Leaving Chelsea, the trail will get a bit more scenic where you will travel near enormous pine trees that tower over you along Redgate Avenue, pass by Lamberts Creek and weave through Jeff Robertson Park—perfect for tossing the frisbee in the daytime or achieving the perfect glowup at night. Jeff Robertson Park is home to the Glowline, the first glow-in-the-dark trail on the East Coast. Also not to be missed in this section is the Weyanoke Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary, open on the weekends and featuring wooded walking paths that will make you forget you’re even in a city. The Sanctuary is maintained by Norfolk Master Gardeners.

Lamberts Point – 1.09 miles

Leaving the park, you’ll pass the busy street of Hampton Boulevard but quickly end up in a quaint residential neighborhood. Lamberts Point community garden can be found here, featuring a serene atmosphere.

Old Dominion University – 1.13 miles

After meandering through Lamberts Point, you’ll arrive on the ODU campus. Wander by the Powhatan Fields, Perry Library, the student center and Foreman Fields, passing by Monarchs on their way to and from class.

Larchmont – Edgewater – 1.32 miles

Adjacent to ODU’s campus is the charming neighborhood of Larchmont. Weave through the streets where you’ll find the waters of Edgewater Haven and Myrtle Park, perfect pit stops to take a water break and enjoy the view. Right off the ERT is D’Egg West, a local’s favorite spot to refuel.

Lochhaven – 1.53 miles

The last part of the trail, Lochhaven, is where you’ll pass stunning residential homes, the Norfolk Country Club Marina and the Hermitage Museum & Gardens. The Hermitage is part of the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations program and showcases a nationally recognized art collection spanning 5,000 years, contemporary exhibition galleries and 12 acres of gardens.

After passing the gardens, you will find yourself continuing through the neighborhood until you reach the end. If you are feeling ambitious, turn around and head back toward Downtown Norfolk to make your trip a total of 21 miles!

Best Wings in Norfolk

Perhaps wings are an integral part of your football season routine, or maybe you just can’t resist the sometimes-spicy, always flavorful sauces slathered on a perfectly cooked wing. A little dip in ranch or bleu cheese, a bite of a complimentary celery stick for good measure, and it’s a darn good day. While Norfolk is known for its sinfully good seafood and top-notch oyster bars, don’t think we don’t know our way around a chicken. There’s no ifs, ands or bones about it: we’ve got the wings you want. Here are some of the best restaurants for wings in Norfolk.

Alkaline

@alkalineva, Instagram

Listen, if you haven’t ordered the sticky wings from Alkaline, you’re for sure missing out. Their twice-fried Korean fried chicken wings are dipped in house sticky house and served with fried garlic. The unforgettable wings were featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and were adored by Guy Fieri just as much as locals love them. Follow an order of wings by Alkaline’s cozy, delicious ramen, and you’ll have a recipe for a perfect meal.

A.W. Shucks

Typically, we’d suggest A.W. Shucks for their seafood and raw bar, but today we’re going to persuade you to try their wings. Buffalo and chipotle wings are classics, but promise us you will at least try the Old Bay wings! Born along the Chesapeake Bay, Old Bay is a true coastal flavor. This 18 spice and herb blend pairs perfectly with seafood (but is seriously satisfying on chicken too).

Blue Moon Taphouse

@watersidedistva, Instagram

Conveniently located at Waterside District, Blue Moon Taphouse is one of the best places around for watching sports. The TVs are abundant, the beers are steadily flowing, and the wings are just how you like ’em. They’ve got boneless wings tossed in a variety of sauces including buffalo, BBQ, Bee Sting and zesty garlic parmesan. For a different variety, their sweet and spicy wings are tossed in a homemade sauce, topped with toasted sesame seeds and served with Asian slaw. No meat? No problem. The spicy buffalo or garlic cauliflower “wings” are spicy-battered, flash-fried and coated to perfection.

Bonchon Norfolk

@bonchonnorfolk, Instagram

Walk down any neighborhood in Korea and you’ll find a mom-and-pop fried chicken joint on almost every block. With years of hands-on experience with Korean cuisine, founder Jinduk Seh decided to focus on perfecting a recipe for fried chicken and share one of his country’s favorite comfort foods with the world. The result was Bonchon, Korean word for “my hometown.”

Dirty Buffalo

@lularoejenproper, Instagram

Buffalo, NY residents relocated to the great city of Norfolk and opened Dirty Buffalo, bringing their ever-famous Buffalo wing recipe with them. Dirty Buffalo offers multiple flavors and has a heat index ranging from no spice to holy moly. Voted the best wings in our region, Dirty Buffalo features bone-in, boneless and even cauliflower wings. Best time to go? Every Wednesday from 5–7 p.m. they have wings for only 89 cents.

The Fishin’ Pig

@fishinpignorfolk, Instagram

Among the obvious fish and pig options you’ll find at this beloved barbecue restaurant, you’ll find some of the best smoked wings ever. Slow smoked, deep fried and broiled to caramelize your favorite sauce, these wings are served with fresh cucumber slices and the classic dippers. Whether you go with BBQ, mild, medium or death wish, you’re sure to leave satisfied.

Grain

@grainnorfolk, Instagram

You thought Wednesday was for wine? Close, but nah. Drop by Grain on Hump Day and you’ll discover that Wednesdays are clearly for wings. Order an appetizer, or go for the whole platter (we won’t judge). With sauces like BBQ, honey BBQ, buffalo or garlic habanero dry rub, you’ll be dipping and devouring for hours.

Orapax

@patrickevanshylton, Instagram

Known and loved as one of the region’s first Greek restaurants, Orapax delivers a fine selection of wings that have stood the test of time. Their Pegasus-Style wings are char-broiled, spiced with Greek herbs and seasonings and paired with a tzatziki sauce to cool things down. Meanwhile, their specialty sauces (buffalo, spicy bourbon or honey hot) are just as popular and come with the classic blue cheese or ranch.

Peck & Pour

Order wings by the platter! With incredible flavors to choose from and a great selection of beers, this is an awesome place to catch up with friends or watch the big game. From sweet soy, zesty orange and red chili, there’s surely something to suit everyone’s palate and spice preferences.

The Public House

@insidevirginia, Instagram

Most any local pub will serve their own version of wings, but they aren’t all guaranteed to be as delicious as the ones you’ll find at Public House. Their wings come in several options: Korean barbecue, ghost pepper, buffalo, smokey bourbon barbecue or Public House special sauce.

Breweries in Norfolk

Breweries have become beloved neighborhood pubs, and lucky for us, Norfolk’s brewery scene has taken off! With multiple breweries in Norfolk, each serving up something a little different, there’s a brew to match every mood. Here’s a guide to exploring the breweries in Norfolk.

Afterglow Brewing

Afterglow is a fun, family-friendly/pet-friendly brewery crafting delicious beers and seltzers in all styles. They brew with state-of-the-art BrewHa equipment from Canada and are the first brewery to use this system in the state of Virginia. They also pride themselves on recycling their used grain to local farmers in the Hampton Roads area. Check them out in Norfolk’s up-and-coming Railyard.

Benchtop Craft Brewing Company

Located in Chelsea, Benchtop offers some of the most unique beer combinations you may ever sip on. Owner Eric Tennant started his career as a food scientist but left his role to further his creativity in the form of beer. Benchtop uses Norwegian yeast which ferments at a much higher temperature allowing them to produce beer faster. They’re one of the only breweries in the country to utilize this method, and it allows them to try new recipes more frequently. Just how unique are their beer creations? We suggest visiting the brewery for yourself to find out, but to tease your taste buds, their Quick Pickle beer is a gosa created with carrots, cucumbers and sea salt.

Bold Mariner Brewing Company

Located in an old bank building in East Beach/Ocean View, this veteran-owned craft brewery will have you feeling like a local in no time as their welcoming demeanor is contagious! Housed inside Bold Mariner is Bar-Q, a local favorite barbecue spot that specializes in beef brisket and craft scratch sausages. Don’t stress; Bold Mariner’s revolving draft selections are equally as flavorful as the food. Frogman Lager is their fan favorite and has won numerous awards.

COVA Brewing Co.

COVA Brewing is nestled in the heart of East Beach/ Ocean View and is owned by two local families whose passions brought this project to life. COVA’s building was formerly an auto repair shop but has been beautifully transformed into a coastal influenced brew-house, offering both craft beers and coffee. Cedar slatted counters imitate beachy dune fencing, and the color schemes throughout reflect the palette and sheen of sea glass. COVA has 14 taps dedicated to signature craft brews and weekly new releases, whether you’re looking for something hoppy, dark, light or sour. If beer’s not your thing, they also have premium sourced wines available.

Their slogan, “there’s always something brewing at COVA…” not only refers to the frothy liquids that fill their fermenters but also their tasty craft coffees. Coffeehouse by day and brewery at night, COVA has mastered quenching thirsts no matter the time of day. What’s truly unique is that you can pour your own beer with their self serve taps from copper handles, chosen for their antibacterial properties.

Elation Brewing

Elation Brewing brings great happiness, hence the name, to Norfolk’s Larchmont neighborhood. Here you’ll find black leather chairs and high top tables made of reclaimed bowling alley lanes. The bar itself is created from beams more than 400 years old taken from a demolished Suffolk Peanut building. As much as you like the architecture, you’re going to love the beer. Larchmont Lager, Notice This, Rose Gose and Highland Park Hazy are all part of their flagships, but rotating taps include guest beers from around the world, ciders, meads and even four wines on tap.

What goes better with beer than pizza? Not much, especially considering it’s Bakehouse pizza. A trusty staple for crusty breads and pizzas, the Bakehouse at Chelsea opened in 2014 and built a following of customers impressed by their high quality, fresh, organic baked goods. Now the Bakehouse at Elation provides those same elements to wow crowds in a brand new atmosphere, with beer as the best pairing ever.

Maker’s Craft Brewery

@_addyskitchen_, Instagram

Enjoy local brews and Emerson cigars at Maker’s Craft Brewery at their onsite cigar lounge. Set in a historic 1906 burlap bag factory, this brewery incorporates the old with the new. The bar is made from reclaimed wood while brick walls line the interior and old cobblestones (found during construction) decorate their outdoor patio. While others went the route of extreme flavors and high ABVs, Maker’s focused on smooth beers best enjoyed with friends. All the grains from beer production are repurposed and sent to a local Virginia Beach farm to provide feed for the cows. Maker’s also features food trucks, live music and other events and pool tables on site.

Rip Rap Brewing Company

In Norfolk’s Railroad District lives the Chesapeake Bay-themed microbrewery, Rip Rap Brewing Company. The bay theme is carried into the beers with names like Breakwater and Luffing Sail. Their enticing and ever-changing lineup is created in small batches, meaning once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Picnic tables and board games fill the brewery with a mural of coastal waterways paying tribute to the owners’ Coast Guard roots.

Smartmouth Brewing Company

You might have heard of this Norfolk-born brewery. After all, they made national news for their Saturday Morning Marshmallow IPA (a Lucky Charms-inspired beer). Located in the Chelsea District, Smartmouth’s tasting room is the perfect place to sip on some favorite brews like their Alter Ego Saison, Game On IPA, Notch 9 Double IPA or Safety Dance Pilsner. Food trucks frequent the brewery, or you can find delicious Norfolk restaurants such as Orapax and the Bakehouse at Chelsea only steps away.

The Veil Brewing Co.

A Richmond favorite opened its doors in 2019 to their second establishment, this time in the heart of Norfolk’s up-and-coming Railroad District. This three-story brewery features taps on all floors and a rooftop balcony overlooking the city. The minimalistic and modern interior plays well to the neon art on display and garage doors that open up into the community.

Serving highly sought after beers without the long lines that normally come with it, this spacious and energetic brewery welcomes guests to experience handcrafted beers with unique flavor profiles on draft or to grab them canned or bottled to-go. With a full kitchen by Codex Chef Ian Hock, you’ll find mouth-watering double stacked burgers and delicious tacos to go alongside the beer of your choice.

Wasserhund Brewing Company

Established in 2015 in Virginia Beach, Wasserhund Brewing Company has grown to become a locals’ favorite. In late 2025, the company – whose name is German for “water dog,” opened a satellite location in Norfolk along Granby St.

The brewery serves everything from “Pick of the Litter” lager to a “Doggy Paddle” IPA, a stout, festbier, red ale and many others. The kitchen serves up pizza, handhelds, appetizers and deserts.

5 Reasons to Visit Ocean View in Autumn

There’s almost nothing better than visiting Norfolk’s beaches on a hot summer day—except, perhaps, visiting those same beaches during fall. When the autumn season rolls around, Norfolk’s beachy neighborhood of Ocean View transforms into a blissful experience, minus the scorching temperatures. We invite you to breathe in the brisk, salty air, feel the cool sand beneath your feet and enjoy a stroll with a warm fall beverage in hand. Here are just a few things to celebrate about Ocean View in autumn.

1. The beaches are less crowded—and you can bring your dog.

Ocean View’s sandy beaches meet the beautiful Chesapeake Bay, a perfect setting for a stroll any time of year. Dress in cozy layers to explore more than seven miles of shoreline in a calm and serene setting. Traveling with a four-legged friend? Bring Fido along! Leashed dogs are welcome on Norfolk’s beaches Labor Day through Memorial Day. Free parking is available at Community Beach ParkOcean View Beach Park, and Sarah Constant Beach Park.

2. It’s arguably the best season for flavored lattes (and flavored beers) .

Whether you look forward to a traditional pumpkin spice or like to turn things up a notch with maple, butterscotch and caramel, it’s the perfect season to cozy up to a coffee counter and order something hot for a brisk day. Stop by COVA Brewing Co., serving a fantastic lineup of coffees, plus beer, wine, seltzers and ciders on tap. Caffeinate to your heart’s content with one of COVA’s homemade syrups available in fun fall flavors. Speaking of delicious fall beverages, it would be a shame to leave COVA Brewing not having tried their pumpkin spiced latte ale.

3. The fish are probably biting. The views are definitely worth trying.

As the Chesapeake Bay cools off, the striper fishing season heats up! The striped bass season is an anticipated fall gift for Chesapeake Bay fishers. An abundance of Virginia state records for award-winning large striped bass has come from these prime fishing waters, with catches up to 70 pounds! Cast a line from shore, or find a chartered fishing excursion here. Ocean View’s famous Ocean View Fishing Pier, along with their handy tackle shop, will be open for your fishing needs until around Thanksgiving or as long as weather permits.

4. Good Eats Are Always IN season

From waterside dining at the Ocean View Pier Restaurant to Stony’s and Longboards, there’s plenty of places to grab a bite next to the water. Ocean View is also home to Sour Street Pizza and many other local favorites.

5. It’s also seafood season.

Just kidding; it’s always seafood season in Norfolk. But, we do love to talk about Ocean View’s seafood restaurants, including Longboards, Captain Groovy’s Grill and Raw Bar, Stony’s Dockside Bar and Grill and the Ocean View Fishing Pier Restaurant. All of these traditional seafood spots are casual, welcoming and ready to warm you up with a steaming bowl of she crab soup after a chilly fall day.

Best Eats in Ocean View and East Beach

Ocean View and East Beach are best known for their beaches, but the food scene in this neighborhood is equally worth the exploration. From local seafood to finger-licking barbecue and amazing international dishes in between, Ocean View has some great options. Here are some of our favorite restaurants in Ocean View, Norfolk.

Captain Groovy’s Raw Bar and Grill

A telltale sign a restaurant is well loved is when their parking lot is always full. Captain Groovy’s has quite the local following and attracts lots of attention around happy hour–one of the best in Norfolk! Crowds keep coming back for their fresh seafood platters, raw bar and Southern-style seafood dishes including their low country boil and seafood creole. They have a laid back atmosphere, plenty of outdoor seating, and they’re just a stone’s throw away from the beach.

Jessy’s Tienda y Taqueria

What better way to end a beach day than with homemade tortilla chips dipped in fresh salsa while sipping a cold cerveza or margarita? Jessy’s has been slinging out delicious Mexican tacos years and even made their debut on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives back in 2017. Jessy’s also doubles as a tienda, a convenience shop for all your Mexican dish needs. They sell carne asada and chorizo in their butcher shop section, hot peppers and Mexican spices in their grocery section and even have a fresh baked goods area where you can indulge in a sweet assortment of Mexican pastries. So, go hungry and we promise you will leave full and happy.

Oceanview Diner

Chow down at the beach’s all-American coastal diner. They have delicious classics on the menu including steak and eggs and chicken and waffles. Don’t forget to also check out their specials board of daily seafood dishes for other options.

Longboards East Beach

Karla’s Beach House

Make yourself right at home at Karla’s Beach House when you dine in for breakfast or lunch. Start the day with a selection from the restaurant’s menu of Beach House Bowls, omelettes, egg dishes, combos or healthy options. Lean toward the sweeter side with high-stacked pancakes or blueberry French toast right off the griddle. Lunchtime calls for a selection of wraps, salads, sandwiches and burgers, plus classic starters like onion rings, mozzarella sticks and lumpia.

Ocean View Fishing Pier Restaurant

The Ocean View Fishing Pier Restaurant, an icon to this neighborhood, sits high in the air offering views of the Chesapeake Bay for miles. Adirondack high top seats that parallel the Chesapeake Bay invite you to sip on a summer cocktail, enjoy some seafood and look for dolphins out on the water.

Stony’s Dockside Bar and Grill

Stony’s was established in 2019 by New Jersey natives Stony and Laura Johnson. Serving up soups and salads, pizzas and a long list of delicious appetizers like Rhode Island calamari, crispy oysters Rockafeller, pizzas, handhelds and tacos at lunch, Stony’s is also known for its wings, burgers and seafood entrees such as teriyaki glazed salmon and fish and chips. Or, check out the chef’s monthly specials which can include Caesar wraps, buffalo chicken taquitos and more. Located at 9659 1. View St. just across from the water.
